The Nicaragua collection documents the Nicaraguan diaspora living in Miami during the 1980s and the political and social conditions in Nicaragua from the 1979 Sandinista revolution onward until their loss of power in 1990.

Many of the materials falling into the latter category are from the United States in origin, such as anti-Soviet propaganda endorsing the anti-Sandinista "Contra" Freedom Fighters, pamphlets that describe the Sandinista government and Central America in general from an American perspective, and periodicals and reports about Nicaragua written to an American audience. The materials that document the Nicaraguan diaspora are mostly fliers, menus, calendars, brochures, and other genres that were from local Nicaraguan businesses, restaurants, clubs, and other organizations. Some of the materials transcend these two categories, as many that concern the political conditions are addressed to or produced by Nicaraguan exiles.

A large part of the collection consists of photocopies of news articles.

Writers that are especially represented by the collection include Ruben Dario, Esteban Duque-Estrada, and Luis Mejia Gonzalez. Associations and organizations that are especially represented include Alanzia Revolucionaria Democrática (ARDE), American Defense Foundation, American Defense Lobby. Asociación Nicaragüenses en el Exilio, Asociación Nicaragüense pro Derechos Humanos, Bloque Opositor del Sur (B.O.S.), Council for Interamerican Security, Fundación Ruben Dario, Nicaraguan American Solidarity (NICAS), Nicaraguan Freedom Fighters, Partido Conservador de Nicaragua, Partido Socialcristiano de Nicaragua en el Exilio, Resistencia Nicaragüense, and Unidad Nicaragüense Opositora (UNO). Materials from some of these were grouped together in a series titled "Associations."

Also of notice are brochures advertising tourism to Nicaragua during the Sandinista regime, and memorabilia such as a handmade Nicaraguan crest, Nicaraguan paper money from the Sandinista era, and a pin that says "If you like Cuba you'll love Nicaragua."

The Martha Frayde Barraqué Papers consist of letters from the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) to Frayde dating between 1962 and 1966.  The collection also includes a group photograph of Lam and Frayde in Mexico in 1957.

The Arva Moore Parks photograph collection consists of images of Cuban exile owned restaurants, stores and other businesses in Miami in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Laura Zarrabeitia Papers consist of four scrapbooks documenting her career as an actress in Cuba in the 1960s and 1970s.  The scrapbooks include photographs, theater programs, contracts, scripts, and clippings.

The papers document professional activities of Carlos Felipe in a capacity of a playwright and of Rosa Felipe in a capacity of an actress.  The materials consist of manuscripts of Carlos Felipe's plays, in which he deals with human passions, giving his characters essential Cuban elements.  Some of the plays were published in Spain, while others were published in Cuba.  The manuscripts of the following plays are included in the papers: "Esta noche en el bosque," for which he received Premio Nacional de Teatro in 1939, "Tambores," and "De pelicula."  A copy of "El Chino," published by Repertorio Teatral Cubano and a published miniature of "Capricho en rojo" are also included in this collection.  The collection also contains academic essays by other authors about Carlos Felipe's plays, especially about "Réquiem por Yarini" in which Carlos Felipe utilizes structure of Greek tragedy.  Materials include clippings with interviews with Carlos Felipe, theatre programs, especially the programs of the several productions of "Réquiem por Yarini" and theatrical reviews.

The materials also document acting career of Rosa Felipe who worked in Cuba, Madrid, Latin America and Miami.  Rosa Felipe worked with other Cuban actors in exile in Miami for the theatre group Repertorio Español.  The bulk of the material documenting Rosa Felipe's career consists of photographs from Cuban TV, theatre and award receiving events.  Moreover, the collection contains Certificates of Recognition, membership cards, slides and theatre programs of productions featuring Rosa Felipe.

The papers document professional activities of Blanca Varela in capacity of a soprano.  Her vocal range from mezzosoprano to soprano coloratura allowed her to sing parts for various operas, operettas and zarzuelas Cubanas.  The materials consist of theatre programs from her performances in operas, operettas and zarzuelas mostly in the Dade County Auditorium.  The collection also includes copies of photographs representing theatre performances with Blanca Varela singing in operas, operettas and zarzuelas for Teatro Nacional in Havana and for Cuban TV.  Moreover, the collection includes published scores with Varela's notes on them, manuscripts of musical scores, manuscripts of poems, L'Elisir D'Amore with annotations, newspaper clippings, a list of her recordings , a booklet describing her biography, and one letter.

The Senator Mel Martinez Papers, donated to the University of Miami in 2010, consist primarily of records created during Martinez’s service as a United States Senator for Florida from 2005 to 2009.  Comprised of 89 boxes, the collection includes legislative and committee files, schedules and appointments, correspondence with constituents and colleagues, speeches and floor statements, media coverage, casework files, campaign files, and administrative office records.  The collection also includes photographs, audiovisual materials, and electronic records that date primarily from 1998 to 2009, but also includes scans of photographs and memorabilia relating to Martinez’s childhood in Cuba and immigration to the United States.  Topics of research include American legislative history, Mel Martinez’s committee assignments, Florida projects, immigration, United States relations with Cuba, services for the elderly, and Florida’s environment, including issues relating to offshore oil drilling.

The papers document activities of Delfín Rodríguez Silva as a reporter. The bulk of materials includes two scrapbooks with articles published by newspapers, mostly in New York and in other North-Eastern cities in the United States, about various Cuban organizations during the early years of exile.  The materials also include a report written by Rodríguez Silva and clippings about Cuban birds.

The records consists of copies of the Notes taken by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz and his associates from Revista Registers and other sources.  The notes consist of alphabetically arranged indexes from the provinces of Las Villas, Matanzas, Camaguey, Habana, Oriente and Pinar del Río of marriages.  There are also genealogical notes on many surnames.

The collection contains 15 photographs of “The Fair”, 1 photograph of the Commodore Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium, 28 photographs depicting scenes and people in Miami and Key West, 1 photograph shot in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1 photograph shot in Greece, and 1 photograph shot in Santa Cruz, California .

“The Fair” is a collection of fifteen 9 x 12 inch prints depicting scenes from a fair. According to a description that accompanies the images, they embody “a sense of the dark, unknown, pockets of foreboding within the happy arena of a fair. It is a look into the dark recesses, the fake walls, the grungy barkers, the dangerous looking men that strap you into a ride.”  Scenes include rides, games, and food stands, as well as an aerial view of a fair. The images are printed on acid free paper using Epson Ultrachrome inks.

The image of the Commodore Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium is a 17 x 22 inch color print depicting grandstand seating overlooking the water. The stadium was constructed on Virginia Key in the 1964 and was initially used for powerboat racing. The stadium closed in 1992 following Hurricane Andrew.

The Miami Woman’s Club Records document the club’s history, as well as its civic, community, and social activities from 1903-2004.The records include minutes from 1903-1914, 1921-1929, 1936-1939, and 1959-1967. The collection also includes yearbooks from 1907-2004, as well as correspondence (correspondents include: Judge Edith M. Atkinson, Louise Austin, Alice Johnston, Anne Stevenson Brown, Katherine B. Trippetts, Katherine S. Fitts, and Eva J. Lewis), financial reports, programs, photographs, and other documentation. Also included are over 50 scrapbooks documenting club activities, membership, and events dating from 1919-1979.

The Lincoln Díaz-Balart Papers document the professional and personal activities of Lincoln Díaz-Balart in his capacity as U.S. Representative for Florida's 21st congressional district and as a member of the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate. Materials in the collection include personal and legislative correspondence on issues such as education, the environment, federal and state budgets, human rights in Cuba, and immigration; and official documents on issues of immigration, international trade, Latin America and Cuba. The collection also contains press releases, audiovisual materials, photographs and clippings collected by Díaz-Balart.

Original order was retained, with papers arranged in two series: Florida House and Senate and United States Congress.

The Art in Miami collection contains brochures, flyers, exhibit catalogs, pamphlets, handouts, and other ephemera documenting art and art-related activities in Miami, with material going as far back as 1996. Included are items from galleries, such as the Alejandra von Hartz Gallery, the Miami International Airport Gallery, and Lowe Art Museum Gallery, as well as various other local museums, art fairs, shows, and the Wynwood Arts District. The collection also includes brochures, programs, maps, handouts, and ephemera from the Art Basel show in Miami Beach, beginning with Art Basel 2009.

Correspondence, broadsides, fact sheets, notices and publications pertaining to the advocacy work of the American Committee for the Protection of Foreign Born from 1964 to 1992. The documents reflect a concern for the rights of immigrants through letters of appeal and thanks, narratives of individual cases of deportation, invitations to rallies and educational conference on the “Bill of Rights” and the status of immigrants, permanent residents and naturalized citizens living in the United States. The organization’s literature also includes information on pertinent legislation such as the Walter-McCarran Act (no time limits on deportation and denaturalization), the Internal Security Act, the Kennedy-Feighan Bills (a time limit on deportation and denaturalization), the Nixon-Rodino Bill and the legal implications of “dragnet raids” of Latin Americans. Finally, the records from the 1970s also document the status of Mexican farm workers, issues of political refugees, and asylum rights of Haitians.

The Max Rameau papers (1992-2010) document his extensive activism for the homeless and the poor within the South Florida communities of the African diaspora. The collection  will be of interest to scholars and students of movements such as the Umoja Village, the Scott-Carver Tenant Council, Miami Dade Election Reform and Take Back the Land. The materials document advocacy work on behalf of people displaced from their homes as a result of  low income housing policies, gentrification, and the U.S. foreclosure crisis at the beginning of the 21st century.  The Max Rameau papers also point to connections between activist groups promoting the economic rights of the diverse constituency  of the African diaspora which reside in Liberty City and Little Haiti. Finally, the collection serves as a record of Mr. Rameau's work with organizations such as Brothers of the Same Mind,  the Haitian American Grassroots Coalition and the Center for Pan African Development.

The papers of Norma Niurka (1942-2009), journalist, writer, and theater critic, include manuscripts, photographs, correspondence, clippings, video recordings, memorabilia, daybooks, and theater programs.  It also contains materials of Norma Niurka's aunt, the actress Miriam Acevedo.

The Guillermo Rosales Papers contain writings and personal effects of Guillermo Rosales (1946-1993), late 20th century Cuban writer and journalist.

The collection contains manuscripts for various novels written by Rosales, including Júralo por Stalin, El Bunker Fantasmaand El juego de la viola(1968), as well as articles and clippings written by and about him, respectively. The collection also contains correspondence; certificates and awards, including Rosales' first prize honor in the University of Miami's Letras de Oro literary competition; and an accompanying scrapbook with photographs of the event.

The Rafael F. Risco papers are comprised of documents regarding Risco's involvement with the Rescate Revolucionario Democrático counter-revolutionary organization in exile. These materials include biographical materials, photographs, and correspondence between members of the organization.

The Division of Communication Services slide collection consists of 35mm slides on University of Miami-related subjects, such as UM buildings, schools and departments, athletic programs, and events dating from the 1920s to the 1980s.

Partially handwritten, partially typewritten, hand colored illustrated manuscript. Contains 24 watercolor illustrations. The manuscript contains two epistolary short stories written by Kate Whiting Patch. Both stories "A Garden Idyl" and "The Blue Bird's Return" were originally published in Harper's Magazine. Illustrator is unknown.

The Herminio Portell Vilá Papers (1901-1992) include research writings, bibliographic notes, and clippings about events in Cuba and Latin America during his exile time in the United States (1960-1992) . Materials also consist of radio transcripts, audio materials of radio programs, memorabilia and correspondence of the Cuban historian and scholar Herminio Portell Vilá.  His primary research interests focused on early U.S.-Cuban relations, but his papers also include materials about those relations in the 20th century and revolutionary Cuba.

Contains typescripts and photocopies of open letters to the governors and representatives of the sovereign states from early to mid 1960s (letter numbers 2-40, 60, 63). All letters are penned by Mary Davison. Topics range from race relations to right-wing views on American history.

This collection contains records relating to the Teatro 8 theater company in Miami, Florida, run by the Hispanic Theater Guild organization. Items include theater ephemera and posters, audiovisual materials of performances, awards and certificates, financial records, clippings, scripts, scrapbooks, and promotional materials.

The Rogelio González Corzo Scrapbook collection contains a scrapbook with various clippings, photographs, and documents relating to the 1961 execution and observed rememberances of Cuban dissident Rogelio González Corzo.

Palm cards, promotional pamphlets, ephemera, and booklets concerning events and exhibitions within the Miami art scene.

Recorded interviews and transcripts of Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science Faculty and others discussing the school's history and it's future.

The Rosenstiel School History Committee, chaired by Dr. Robert N. Ginsburg, began producing an oral history of the Rosenstiel School in 1988 with a recorded conversation with the founder and first Dean, F. G. Walton Smith. Almost thirty senior scientific and technical staff members were interviewed on audio cassette tapes, and the tapes were transcribed by Elosie Zakevich and Jean Yehle, of RSMAS.

This collection consists of publications for the planning and building of Florida homes primarily, but not exclusively, targeted to returning war veterans.  The majority of the pamphlets and guidebooks in this collection were distributed through contractors, builders, and real estate agencies located primarily in the Florida region during the 1940s and 50s.

The Asela Torres Photography Collection contains digitized photographs and published materials featuring the photographs of Cuban-born theater photographer, Asela Torres.

This collection is divided into two series. Series I contains digitized photographs taken by Asela Torres at various theater events and performances. These digitized photographs are accesible through the University of Miami Digital Collections website. Series II contains original theater programs, pamphlets, and ephemera featuring photography by Torres.

The Jorge Castellanos Papers contain personal papers from the exiled Cuban professor and author Jorge Castellanos (1915-2011). The collection contains research notes, book manuscripts and copies of published works authored by Jorge Castellanos related to his research and writings.

This collection consists of academic bulletins created and published by University of Miami from 1926 to 2005. The UM academic bulletins serve as an aid for undergraduate and graduate students who need information about the university's academic programs and course listings.

This collection consists of the University of Miami's class schedules in print, which used to be published each semester by the Office of the Registrar.

The University Archives holds volumes from 1939 to 2004.  Some issues have been bound and titled "University of Miami Class Schedule" on spine.

The abolition of enslavement in Cuba took place gradually over the course of several years. In 1880, the Spanish colonial government instituted a system called patronato, loosely translated as "apprenticeship." Most of the workings of the enslavement system were preserved, but patrocinados, as former enslaved people came to be known, received a minimal set of legal rights and were to be paid a token wage. The transition to the patronato system was overseen by a provincial network of government agencies called Juntas de Patronato. The Junta Provincial de Patronato de Matanzas was created in 1880 when the Law of Patronato was passed. As a central body, it processed claims and cases from a series of local juntas throughout the province of Matanzas. The records in this collection contain official documents, correspondence between local juntas and the main junta, and tables reporting names or numbers of patrocinados. The collection also documents the cases of individual patrocinados who were trying to obtain their freedom through the provisions of the new law.

All of the materials in this collection have been digitized and are available through the University of Miami Digital Collections.

The Association of Hiroshima University donated five pieces of roof tiles to the University of Miami in January 2013, together with a letter from Hiroshima University's president, English brochures of the University, a picture book on the atomic bomb victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and a picture book of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake.

The tiles were collected from the bottom of Motoyasu River, which was ground zero of the atomic bomb explosion.  The largest roof tile measures 5 inches by 7 inches. Their safety is certified by the Institute of Radiation Effect (Japan) as a guarantee that they will not cause any health damage to humans.

The donor wished the tiles to be exhibited and used as an educational tool to spread the Association's call for everlasting peace and absolute opposition to nuclear weapons.  The University of Miami was contacted because it had sent Hiroshima University some seeds from a sabal palmetto tree in 1951 to help in greening the University grounds.

The Muriel M. Curtis scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photographs, and several University of Miami publications and documents. She was a student of the university in 1937.

Elizabeth Erickson was an instructor in the University of Miami's physical education program during 1928 and 1931. Her collection contains black and white photographs of students and colleagues in the program, other UM-related subjects, and Miami.

There is also a 2-page essay titled "Physical Education Program, University of Miami, 1928-1931, Elizabeth (Betty) Erickson, Instructor" in the collection.  It was written especially for the UM Archives and received on March 31, 1975.

The Edmundo López papers contain correspondence, musical scores, diplomas, photographs and awards related to Cuban musician Edmundo López. Of note are a manuscipt musical score dedicated to Sindo Garay and correspondence and photos of López and Sindo Garay.

The collection contains materials on homecoming events at the University of Miami from 1968 to 1974. It includes photographs, posters, event proposals, and correspondence collected by Randy Femmer, who was Chairman of the Undergraduate Student Government of the university in 1967. The collection was donated by him to the University Archives on September 12, 1974.

The Martha Dorn collection contains an M-Club sweater, various University of Miami publications, a portrait, newspaper clippings, and other items of memorabilia. She was a student at the university from 1936 to 1940.

This album contains programs, invitations, photographs, and press coverage articles of the dedication ceremony which took place on March 26, 1970 at the University of Miami School of Music on the Coral Gables campus.

This collection contains three reports on the University of Miami disaster preparation and recovery plans, which were revised on June 1, 2002, June 1, 2003, and June 1, 2006. 

The Haitian Diaspora Oral History collection includes videos and selected transcripts of oral history interviews conducted with individuals of Haitian ancestry that are well-renowned in the world of the arts, community activism, civic leadership, and many professional organizations. The interviews were conducted by Kevin Mason, Lucrèce Louisdhon-Louinis and Béatrice Colastin Skokan.

The Burdsall Family papers contains correspondence between members of the Burdsall family of Connecticut and, later, Lexington, Kentucky. Of note, the collection contains correspondence between American-born dancer Lorna Burdsall to family and friends in the United States while she was living and dancing in Cuba.

This collection is divided into two series. Series 1 contains letters to and from Lorna Burdsall while she was living and working in Cuba. Series 2 contains letters to and from various members of the Burdsall family as well as friends of the Burdsall family.

The collection consists of three DVDs that contain the complete ceremony "Ron Fraser Celebration of Life" held on February 23, 2013 at the Knight Sports Complex, University of Miami.

The Juan Boza papers contain clippings, photographs, legal documents, press releases, correspondence, resumes and programs related to Cuban artist Juan Boza (1941-1991), mostly during his time in exile in New York City, New York.

Malaika, a handbook published in the 1970s and 1980s, lists resources and organizations by and for the Black students and faculty of the University of Miami.  Malaika is an African term,  of Swahili origin, which means togetherness.

Earlier editions are subtitle "United Black Students' Handbook," and later editions are subtitled "Chronicle of Black Affairs."

A 1969 brochure of Black Culture Week was also found with the booklets.

The Office of Admission records contain materials such as departmental correspondence and mission statement (written on May 5, 1983).

The Office of Financial Assistance records contain materials such as annual reports and departmental correspondence.

The Pablo Chao papers document Chao's involvement with the Koubek Center when the Center was affiliated with the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.

The papers include clippings and scrapbooks of clippings of news related to Koubek Center events and course offerings; a CD of photographs; and Koubek Center brochures and course catalogs.

The publication "The perfect storm: Miami Hurricanes national champions 2001" was published by Sports Illustrated as a special commemorative issue.  [title page: The perfect storm: Miami Hurricanes: undefeated national champions 2001.]  The hard cover special collector's edition has a serial number 03173.

The Fernando Ortíz Papers principally contain original manuscript and typescript notes taken by Fernando Ortíz (1881-1969) on vernacular Cuban architecture and the history of Cuban architecture. Ortíz was specifically researching the indigenous, African and other folk influences on architecture and building construction.  Other materials related to his research, such as pamphlets and clippings, represent a small part of the collection.

The collection also contains preservation photocopies of the original manuscript material and one folder of scholarly research on the work of Fernando Ortíz.

The Agustín Acosta Papers contain the correspondence, writings and memorabilia of Agustín Acosta (1886-1979), named Cuba's National Poet in 1955.

The collection includes correspondence between Agustín Acosta and his literary and political contemporaries, as well as his wife, Consuelo Acosta.

Writings include published pamphlets from Acosta and other authors on topics ranging from poetry to politics and science; articles and clippings written by and about Acosta, as well as those collected by him and his wife; and manuscripts and galley proofs of Acosta's poetry books.

The collection also contains memorabilia related to Acosta's personal and professional life, including postcards; photographs; homages to the poet, both late in his career and posthumous; drawings and caricatures; and scrapbooks.

The collection contains publications and organizational records of the University of Miami's School of Architecture, such as official newsletters, publications, promotional postcards, and other materials.

The Ricardo Arregui Papers contain materials documenting the advertising career of Ricardo Arregui (b. 1919), including scrapbooks, photographs, clippings, advertisement flyers, brochures, coupons and signs, as well as posters for Bacardí, Galletas Gilda, Ocean Bank, Iberia Air Lines, Ron Castillo, Polar and Recal Beer and many other products for which Arregui headed advertising campaigns with his ad agencies in Cuba and Miami, Florida. The collection also contains examples of audiovisual materials and LP jingles with recordings for Galletas Gilda, Líneas Aéreas Iberia, Cinturones Century,  Ron Castillo, Desodorante Leo-Nor, Partagás, Vino Seco Edmundo, etc., and awards, diplomas and certificates that Arregui's agency won for their ad campaigns.

The Moravia Capó Papers contain correspondence, manuscripts, clippings and photographs related to Moravia Capó, Cuban educator and human rights activist who lived and worked in Nicaragua and Miami from the 1960s to her death in 2007.

The López Oña y Morales Family Collection primarily contains genealogical research and essays regarding the López, Ribalta, Oña and Morales families of Sagua La Grande, Cuba, as well as articles on the region.

The collection includes articles on events that occured in the region and businesses that operated there. The collection also contains steamship contracts from the early to mid-1900s.

RSMAS Alumni Association Scrapbook contains selected black and white and color photographs of the Deans, Faculty, staff, students; as well as the campus facilities, research endeavors, events and activities from 1940 to 1994.

The Ariel Remos Papers contain the personal papers of Cuban journalist Ariel Remos (d. 2013). They include extensive newspaper and online publication clippings, as well as essays, official reports, periodicals and pamphlets for which Remos wrote, correspondence with other writers and intellectuals in exile, photographs, and audiovisual material. The majority of the materials relate to Remos' time as a Cuban exile journalist and intellectual in Miami, Florida.

The José Ignacio Rasco papers contain the personal papers of Cuban politician, journalist and exile leader José Ignacio Rasco (1925-2013). Materials include newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, reports, scholarly essays, pamphlets, event documents, and handwritten notes, mostly relating to the Partido Demócrata Cristiano, which he founded in 1959 in Cuba and continued the organization in exile. Other materials include notes and essays that Rasco delivered at conferences, scripts from when he hosted Universidad del Aire on Radio Martí in Miami, and clippings of his articles and those of others published in a variety of newspapers and magazines.

The Aviation ephemera collection contains posters, reports, postcards, brochures, programs, pamphlets, and other ephemera from all parts of the globe relating to the subject of aviation and its vast history.

The 2013 Miami Beach election collection contains ephemera relating to the many candidates who ran for mayor or city commissioner in the 2013 Miami Beach election. Major issues of the campaigns included the proposed redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center, ongoing flooding issues on the island, as well as more general issues such as corruption and traffic. The collection also includes ephemera relating to a bond referendum for the Jackson Health System, a charter amendment regarding the redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center, sample ballots, and newspaper articles.

The Andrew Kaufman Photography collection includes a box set of two hand made books created by the photographer that document the graffiti and street art in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami. Also included in the collection is a folder of ephemera advertising Kaufman's photography business.

"Archive of letters between members of the Michelsen and Havens family, including correspondence from Kate C. Havens, a prominent female theosophist from Miami, Florida and Cloudland, Geogia. Approximately 75 letters plus newspaper clippings, ephemera, and a sketch book containing costume designs by Cleo Michelsen. The majority of these letters are addressed to Cleo Michelsen, a young lady, who is interested in the arts and would eventually marry Auriel Bessemer, a noted muralist of the New Deal. Cleo came from a well-established family from Miami. The letters are written from her brothers, sisters, parents, and grandparents. The family is well-educated, and the letters are articulate and well-written.

However, with the Depression looming over the country, her family is is in the midst of a crisis. Cleo's father has seen his business fortunes plummet, and he and Cleo's mother have separated. Her father eventually moves to Cuba where he attempts to revive his holding company. Her mother stays in Florida but is in terrible financial straits. One of Cleo's sisters writes regarding the lack of money and her mother's impoverished state - one which forces her to go days without eating.

In addition, as mentioned above, Cleo has been courted by Auriel Bessemer, who she meets in art school. A promising artist himself, they go on to marry in 1935. During the New Deal, Auriel was commissioned by the Treasury Department to create seven murals - "Historical and Industrial Scenes - Sketches of Virginia," for the first federal building in Arlington. The murals were conserved in 2007, and today, they remain in their permanent home in the U.S. Post Office Building in Arlington.

Most importantly, in this collection are a series of letters from Cleo's grandmother, Kate C. Havens, who splits her time between her home in Miami, Florida and a mountain retreat in Cloudland, Georgia. Mrs. Havens originally hailed from Chicago and was a prominent voice in the Theosophy movement of the time, delivering lectures, writing articles and becoming acquainted other notable theorists, including Anne Besant and Max Heindel. In Miami, she continued her involvement with Theosophy becoming the president of the newly formed Theosophical Society there in 1919. She was a free and very liberal thinker and also became heavily involved in the Women's suffrage movement, eventually becoming an officer on the legal status of women in the Florida State League of Women Voters.

Havens has a great affection for Cleo and writes her interesting heartfelt letters, which are mostly always infused with a Theosophical bent, injecting her views on spirituality and orientalism, providing her opinions on important theosophical readings, reporting upon her lectures given to the Theosophical Society in Miami, and giving accounts of two fascinating meetings with Pearl Buck and Dr. Alvin Kuhns." -Denning House Antiquarian Books & Manuscripts

The Jim Cason Photograph Collection contains photographs from former Principal Officer of the US Interests Section in Havana Jim Cason's (b. 1945) time in Cuba from 2002 to 2005.

The collection consists of digital photographs and a talking doll of Jim Cason that was distributed during his time as the Principal Officer of the US Interests Section in Havana, Cuba.

Francisco de la Vega Collection consists of the correspondence between Francisco de la Vega Company, settled in Santander, Spain, and his partners from Havana, Cuba. The correspondence is about the situation of the trasatlantic trade of sugarcane and flour between those companies (1829-1835).

This collection contains photographs, papers, clippings, manuscripts, and religious materials associated with Cuban diplomat, writer and lawyer José María Chacón y Calvo (1892-1969).

"The Fanny Kemble Playbill Collection is a collection of 28 playbills from 1829-1832, comprising of her years on the English stage and including her first performance on any stage. Fanny Kemble (Frances Ann Kemble, 1809-1893), the daughter of the actors Charles and Marie Kemble, was born in London on November 27, 1809. She made her first appearance on the stage when she appeared as Juliet in her father's production of "Romeo and Juliet" on October 5, 1829. Fanny was a great success, and this role was followed by several others in her father's Covent-Garden Theatre. She played all the principal women's parts, notably Portia, Beatrice, and Lady Teazle. Most of the performances were at Theatre Royal Covent-Garden with a few few performances at Theatre Royal Edinburgh where she performed with her brother on a tour in June of 1830." -Golden Legend, Inc.

The Alberto Cuartas Papers contain the photo albums, correspondence and other materials of Alberto Cuartas, counselor and house parent at Camp Matecumbe in West Dade, FL during Operation Pedro Pan and in other children’s homes under the auspice of the Catholic Welfare Bureau during the 1960s and 1970s.

The collection primarily consists of photo albums of Pedro Pan children in various children’s homes under the Catholic Welfare Bureau, including Camp Metecumbe. Also included are correspondence from Pedro Pans to Mr. Cuartas and other Pedro Pan memorabilia.

A collection of several informally published papers, reports, bulletins, directories, brochures, articles and other documents, surrounding the Haitian culture both in and outside of the United States. Topics of interest include reports on the Haitian diasporic communities in South Florida and their economic situations, the history of Haitian refugees and detainees, and documents discussing Haitian civil rights in the United States.

The collection also contains a selection of materials from the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, located in Miami, Florida. Their organization is dedicated to providing a voice for the Haitian-American community in South Florida and assisting Haitian-Americans with any needs they may have in the following areas: social services, education, economic self-sufficiency, and access to health care.

The Association of Cuban Engineers collections includes DVD recordings of conference presentations, articles of incorporation of the Association of Cuban Engineers Scholarship Foundation, Inc., the bylaws of the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers, gala programs and ephemera.

This collection contains photograph albums and audio-visual materials documenting the various events Jan Mapou had taken part in and organized for Sosyete Koukouy (The Fireflies Society) and Libreri Mapou.

The Cuban Map Collection contains maps dating from the 16th century to the 21st century. The digital collection contains maps in the public domain dating from the colonial period to 1923 and includes general maps of the island, provincial maps, city and town maps, and other specialized map formats in a variety of scales, colors and artistic styles.

Larry Thompson was a humorist and columnist who wrote and reported for the Miami Herald for 28 years. His column, "Life with Larry," tackled topics such as politics, daily life, local history, and events. This collection contains clippings of his work written by him from 1956-1973, all arranged chronologically.

This collection contains a collection of writings and research from local historian, playwright, director, and teacher, Sandra Riley, and poet, teacher, and musician, Peggy C. Hall. The materials currently include manuscripts, research notes, journals, interviews, drafts, playscripts, ephemera, poetry, and other materials pertaining to their life's work and writings.

A collection of vintage greeting cards, which currently features a unique selection of cards acquired by an unknown collector over thirty years. Thematically, the greeting cards showcase the ubiquitous view of traditional gender roles that permeated different eras, with the earliest cards dating to the 1920s. Though the cards are meant to be colorful, playful, and sentimental, they highlight the evolution of the depiction of both genders and their interactions as a couple over time, and in some cases, even prove to be subversive of traditional gender norms.

This collection contains several contemporary exhibit catalogs from other universities around the United States with concentrations in their libraries and Special Collections departments.

A collection of contemporary zines created by Japanese women as part of an exhibit entitled "Feminine," which was curated by  Tokyo's Zine's Mate and presented at the 2011 New York Art Book Fair. This archive was once part of the personal collection of Matt Wobensmith, who created the zine Outpunk and is known for being an avid zine collector and zine show curator.

The zines in this collection represent a wide array of genres, often utilizing photography, art, writing, and ephemera to create unique art pieces that are produced in limited quantities and locally distributed. They primarily showcase the viewpoints of modern Asian and Asian-American underground artists with such noted topics as fashion, sexuality, gender, travel, social issues, education, and self-expression. Written in both Japanese and English, many of the zines exhibit a heavy array of western influence, referencing western folklore, cinema, and pop culture as well as adopting western-inspired punk and alternative fashion. There is a spirit of freedom and unrestrained creativity that pervades this selection, captured by many crude sketches, both black and white and colorful, think pieces, and abstract drawings, all which serve to produce an intriguing snapshot of the growing art and zine movement in Japan in the 21st century.
