The New Urbanism is the only distinctly American architectural movement of the 20th Century that systemically critiqued the conventional urban planning patterns of the post-war period. The University of Miami Libraries Architecture Research Center Archives is the sole repository for collecting and housing materials documenting this movement that impacted the discourse on urbanization theories and town planning. The principles of the movement were articulated in 1994 in the Charter of the Congress for The New Urbanism. The Congress for the New Urbanism, an organization that promotes walkable, mixed-use neighborhood development and sustainable communities was recognized by the New York Times as "…the most important phenomenon to emerge in American Architecture in the post-Cold-War era."
The New Urbanism movement, which signaled a turning point from the segregated planning and architecture of post-war America to a return to historic principles of traditional town planning, became the focus of a series of contested dialogues not just among architects, planners and developers, but among historians, environmentalists and policy makers as well. The movement continues to influence the principles of town planning and design, and spark debate among its advocates and critics as evidenced in the public fora thirty years following its inception.
This collection includes drawings, project folios, books and manuscripts, periodicals, article clippings, correspondence, videos, CDs, DVDs, audio cassettes and other materials related to New Urbanism theory, writing, and design.

This collection contains publications, announcements, administrative papers, reports, and ephemera associated with the University of Miami School of Architecture.  It includes an executive summary, Seventy + Years of Architectural Education at the University of Miami, by Prof. Ralph Warburton, which consists of photocopied documents of administrative records compiled mostly from University Archives.  They are arranged chronologically from 1950-2002 in a ring binder. The collection also contains correspondence, newsletters, graphics, announcements, invitations, project files, and SoA related ephemera.

This collection contains the teaching collections of Paul Buisson, Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture & Planning in the School of Engineering and the School of Architecture from 1964 to 1988. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia photographing architectural heritage sites, urban developments and other architecturally relevant cultural attractions.

This collection contains a selection of historic preservation reports prepared by Architect, Allan T. Shulman.  The majority of the surveys are of Miami Beach architecture from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s and one report for Hialeah Park and its immediate environs. This collection holds the distinction of providing a documentation of recommendations for the preservation, restoration and conservation of the sub-tropical building environment with an emphasis on the architecture of the resort/hospitality industry in Miami Beach.

The Architecture Faculty Oral History Project is a series of interviews with faculty from the University of Miami School of Architecture. These oral histories serve a fundamental purpose in capturing and preserving the individual memories of the faculty. The project began with informal conversations to assess how the library could best address their scholarly support needs. The interview process revealed critical yet untold stories about the history and pedagogical evolution of the School of Architecture. An ongoing project, the faculty oral histories documented here provide the scaffolding for narrating the school's pedagogical trajectories from the mid-century to the present.

Business records and research papers of T.A. Fennell, Jr., proprietor of the "The Orchid Jungle". (Fennell Orchid Co., Inc.). Contains correspondence, receipts, plant catalogs, stock lists, lecture notes, photographs, field notes, bulletins and newsletters from various botanical organizations.

A collection of 151 photographs kept on 35mm slides. Most were taken in 1979 with outlying dates as early as 1978 and as late as 1987. Includes multiple pictures taken of buildings and landscapes around the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. Other pictures are of various buildings and street views around south Florida including Palm Beach, Downtown Miami, Port of Miami, Opa-Locka, Hialeah, Coconut Grove, Miami Beach, Vizcaya, and Cape Florida.

The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Records Collection includes annual conference programs, promotional materials, attendance lists, correspondence, audio visual recordings, research project materials, publications, award submission packets, award programs, and administrative files relating to the CNU’s annual congress meeting, annual Charter Awards, board meetings, research projects, and CNU publications. The records cover the organization's activities between 1991 and 2017.

This collection contains fragmentary texts and images documenting cultural expressions from the Caribbean and South America. Many of the transitory materials grouped under ephemera include posters, postcards, leaflets, tracts, special editions, programs and menus published in countries such as the Bahamas, Brazil, Cuba, Curaçao Grenada, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This collection consists of the technical files and papers of John G. Borger (1913-2011), who served as Pan American World Airways, Inc.'s Vice President and Chief Engineer. His materials document the development and acquisition of: Boeing aircrafts, including the 377 Stratocruiser, B-707 and B-747; the Douglas DC-6B, DC-7B, and DC-7C, the DC-8 jet; the Lockheed Constellation and the L-1011; the Convair CV-240; the Dassault Falcon 20, 10, and 50; the Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce engines, including the JT9D; and the Supersonic Transport (SST) aircraft.

Types of materials retained in the collection include: pamphlets, programs, engineering information, studies, evaluation reports, manuals, personal notes taken by John G. Borger, lectures, typescripts, correspondence, diagrams, flight path drawings, periodicals, research, articles, ephemera, newsclippings, and 3D material objects.

The Walter Adams Collection contains letters, deeds, notes, property records, and receipts from the years 1674 to 1786, in the Massachusetts area.

The John Allen collection contains three rolls of tape documenting events celebrating the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Birth. The first roll covers a Joint Session of Congress on February 12, 1959. The second and third roll cover events at the Lincoln Museum.

Hervey Allen was a literature professor, poet, World War I veteran, and Trustee of the University of Miami from 1936 until 1949, the year that he died. Allen had a formative influence on the "Friends of the University" organization, as well as on Latin American studies at the University.

The collection consists of letters both by Allen and about Allen after his passing away, clippings about Allen and his writings, photographs, photocopies and typescripts of Allen's writings, and obituaries including an official University of Miami memorial.

This collection contains the papers of Dr. Roger W. and Frances S. Arnold. Dr. Roger W. Arnold was a doctor who practiced Naprapathy and massage, an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Miami, and a World War II air warden. Frances S. Arnold was a soprano soloist in churches, programs, and music clubs, an editor of the Florida Teacher Magazine, member of the Florida Historical Society, and 1948 president of the Mothers of Sigma Chi Coral Gables Chapter. She was active in the research and development program of the University of Miami, and in local music clubs. The papers document their activity in all of the above, and also contain materials (i.e. brochures, directories, pamphlets, photographs) on the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Miami at large.

Ralph Middleton Munroe (1851-1933) settled in Florida in 1891, drawn by its lush tropical landscapes and beautiful seashores. An avid yachtsman and photographer, the Commodore traveled the South Florida coast capturing images of its pristine wilderness and the early inhabitants. Munroe’s photographs provide a unique visual record of South Florida history before its rapid urbanization. The Ralph M. Munroe Family Papers contain a rich assortment of photographs, albums, postcards, correspondence, clippings and manuscripts that document the frontier life in Coconut Grove.

This collection contains one audiotape of a lecture given by Herbert Aptheker on April 20, 1966 at the University of Miami Student Union.

The papers consists of correspondence, photographs, clippings, publications, awards, certificates and medals, speeches and various other materials documenting the life and work of Dr. John O. Brown, first African American Ophthalmologist in Florida and the first African American President of the American Medical  Association. The collection also includes clippings, sermons, speeches and photos of African American folklorist, Rev. William Faulkner.

Dr. José Agustín Balseiro (1900-1991) was an award-winning author, poet, and scholar of Latin American Studies and Hispanic literature. He was also a professor of Hispanic Literature at the University of Miami from 1946 to 1967.

Throughout his career, Dr. Balseiro exhibited a strong interest in Latin American and Hispanic-American studies, Latin American and Spanish literature, and Puerto Rican history and literature. His papers, donated to the University of Miami, reflect all of these interests and range in date from his earliest activities as a writer in Spain to his final days working as a consultant to the University of Miami Libraries starting in 1974. Much of the content consists of correspondence, clippings, typescripts, and periodicals in which Balseiro’s writings were featured. Also included is sheet music belonging to his father, Rafael Balseiro, who was a Puerto Rican composer.

Of special note are three bronze medallions: (1) from the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena, commemorating el primer Centenario del Natalicio de Luiz Muñoz Rivera (the centennial of the birth of Luiz Muñoz Rivera); (2) from the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena, commemorating el Centenario de la Abolición de la Esclavidud in Puerto Rico (the centennial of the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico); and (3) from the University of Panama commemorating the first 25 years of the University’s existence.

The John W. Bennett collection contains two audiocassettes titled "Alistair Cook speaks of H. L. Mencken from the tape of Mrs. R. R. Bennett, 6/15/80" and "Conversation - H. L. Mencken and Dr. Donald Kirkley. June 30, 1948," two newspaper clippings on H. L. Mencken, and a photocopy of a book titled "Roosevelt and the Republic" by John W. Bennett.
