  • Standard size and format for consumer-level analog recording on videotape cassettes. Describes a videotape one-half inches in width (12.7mm); this videotape format, known primarily as VHS (Video Home System), was developed in the 1970s for use with home videocassette recorders. It contains 240 lines of horizontal resolution.

Joseph L. Herndon (1948-2021) was a historical preservationist who aided in several global restoration projects, including the Old Spanish Fort (1730) in Pascagoula, Mississippi; Qasr Ibrihim (1600's) in Hoffuf, Saudi Arabia; the Old Post Office (1897) in Washington, D.C.; The Rugby Colony (1880's) in Rugby, Tennessee; Union Station (1900) in Nashville, Tennessee; The Germantown neighborhood revitalization (1840's) in Nashville, Tennessee; The Biltmore Hotel (1926) in Miami, Florida. His papers include a large breadth of information and research pertaining to the Biltmore Hotel, the Panama Canal, Turkey, the Deering Estate, resorts, and other areas of interest to Joseph Herndon. Material types represented within include audio-visual materials (CD-ROMS, VHS, photographs, slides), print-outs, administrative files, financial files, travel brochures, ephemera, architectural plans, interior design samples, research files, reports, proposals, periodicals, and 3D objects.

Photographs: candid photos of KWLS authors and attendees; some studio/posed portraits.

Organizational records (6 cubic feet): 3-ring binders containing board agendas, minutes, related correspondence, and press clippings. Financial records (3 cubic feet) tax and accounting records, grant records.

Audio recordings: approximately 75 unique audio cassettes, 20 unique DAT (digital audio tape) recordings; 100+ unique CD (compact disc) recordings 1999-2008; 85 GB unique audio stored on digital drives, 2009-2014.

Video recordings: 7 VHS cassettes.

Ephemera and other promotional materials: posters, programs, postcards, and publications.

Books received with the donation will be cataloged separately.

Dr. P. A. Phillips was a history professor at the University of Miami.

The P. A. Phillips Collection contains materials from three of his history courses - two undergraduate and one graduate - where students were asked to interview a World War II veteran and compose an oral history report based on that interview. The materials include essays, transcripts, audio recordings, and videocassettes.

Paul Nagel was a professor at the School of Communication at the University of Miami, as well as a writer, producer, director, and actor in non-theatrical "sponsored films."

The collection includes University of Miami radio tapes and video cassettes, scripts, and publications including Tempo, UM Bulletin, UM School of Music, UM Ballet, UM School of Communication; a series of historical photographs depicting students at work in the Radio, Television and Motion Pictures department of the School of Communication; and clippings, scripts, playbills and programs from the Coconut Grove Playhouse, Parker Playhouse, the Ring Theatre, Players State Theatre, the Cannes Film Festival, Mayfair Theatre, and the Carillon Hotel.
