Thematically, the greeting cards showcase the ubiquitous view of traditional gender roles that permeated different eras, with the earliest cards dating to the 1920s. Though the cards are meant to be colorful, playful, and sentimental, they highlight the evolution of the depiction of both genders and their interactions as a couple over time, and in some cases, even prove to be subversive of traditional gender norms.
