This collection consists of the technical files and papers of John G. Borger (1913-2011), who served as Pan American World Airways, Inc.'s Vice President and Chief Engineer. His materials document the development and acquisition of: Boeing aircrafts, including the 377 Stratocruiser, B-707 and B-747; the Douglas DC-6B, DC-7B, and DC-7C, the DC-8 jet; the Lockheed Constellation and the L-1011; the Convair CV-240; the Dassault Falcon 20, 10, and 50; the Pratt and Whitney and Rolls Royce engines, including the JT9D; and the Supersonic Transport (SST) aircraft.
Types of materials retained in the collection include: pamphlets, programs, engineering information, studies, evaluation reports, manuals, personal notes taken by John G. Borger, lectures, typescripts, correspondence, diagrams, flight path drawings, periodicals, research, articles, ephemera, newsclippings, and 3D material objects.
Hervey Allen was a literature professor, poet, World War I veteran, and Trustee of the University of Miami from 1936 until 1949, the year that he died. Allen had a formative influence on the "Friends of the University" organization, as well as on Latin American studies at the University.
The collection consists of letters both by Allen and about Allen after his passing away, clippings about Allen and his writings, photographs, photocopies and typescripts of Allen's writings, and obituaries including an official University of Miami memorial.
The John W. Bennett collection contains two audiocassettes titled "Alistair Cook speaks of H. L. Mencken from the tape of Mrs. R. R. Bennett, 6/15/80" and "Conversation - H. L. Mencken and Dr. Donald Kirkley. June 30, 1948," two newspaper clippings on H. L. Mencken, and a photocopy of a book titled "Roosevelt and the Republic" by John W. Bennett.
The Dr. John Bitter collection contains materials documenting Bitter's career as a conductor and composer. The collection includes sheet music for several compositions by Bitter, as well as publications about the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and a 1953 photograph of the University of Miami Orchestra at the Miami Beach Auditorium. Also included are numerous programs from the 1940s-1960s, including ones from the UM Symphony Orchestra, the Greater Miami Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
The Nicaragua collection documents the Nicaraguan diaspora living in Miami during the 1980s and the political and social conditions in Nicaragua from the 1979 Sandinista revolution onward until their loss of power in 1990.
Many of the materials falling into the latter category are from the United States in origin, such as anti-Soviet propaganda endorsing the anti-Sandinista "Contra" Freedom Fighters, pamphlets that describe the Sandinista government and Central America in general from an American perspective, and periodicals and reports about Nicaragua written to an American audience. The materials that document the Nicaraguan diaspora are mostly fliers, menus, calendars, brochures, and other genres that were from local Nicaraguan businesses, restaurants, clubs, and other organizations. Some of the materials transcend these two categories, as many that concern the political conditions are addressed to or produced by Nicaraguan exiles.
A large part of the collection consists of photocopies of news articles.
Writers that are especially represented by the collection include Ruben Dario, Esteban Duque-Estrada, and Luis Mejia Gonzalez. Associations and organizations that are especially represented include Alanzia Revolucionaria Democrática (ARDE), American Defense Foundation, American Defense Lobby. Asociación Nicaragüenses en el Exilio, Asociación Nicaragüense pro Derechos Humanos, Bloque Opositor del Sur (B.O.S.), Council for Interamerican Security, Fundación Ruben Dario, Nicaraguan American Solidarity (NICAS), Nicaraguan Freedom Fighters, Partido Conservador de Nicaragua, Partido Socialcristiano de Nicaragua en el Exilio, Resistencia Nicaragüense, and Unidad Nicaragüense Opositora (UNO). Materials from some of these were grouped together in a series titled "Associations."
Also of notice are brochures advertising tourism to Nicaragua during the Sandinista regime, and memorabilia such as a handmade Nicaraguan crest, Nicaraguan paper money from the Sandinista era, and a pin that says "If you like Cuba you'll love Nicaragua."
The Truth About Cuba Committee, Inc. Records consist of the official organizational records of the Truth About Cuba Committee, Inc. (TACC) from 1961 to 1975, its years of operation, including publications, membership records, radio program transcripts and audio recordings, and photographs. The bulk of the materials consist of correspondence to and from Luis V. Manrara, TACC president, membership records, and TACC publications. Folder headings retain the original titles assigned by TACC to their materials.
Of special interest are 233 audiotapes, transcriptions, films, and slides, the majority of which are of debates and interviews of Luis V. Manrara with prominent international political figures as well as exiled Cuban political figures. These materials are described in Appendix I of the original finding aid. Also of note is Series IV. Reports and Publications – TACC, 1961-1973, which contains the various publications of the Committee, from single sheet circulars to brochures and pamphlets.
The original finding aid is accompanied by a personal names index and a corporate name index. Finding aid appendices and indexes are not published online.
The Martha Frayde Barraqué Papers consist of letters from the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) to Frayde dating between 1962 and 1966. The collection also includes a group photograph of Lam and Frayde in Mexico in 1957.
The Laura Zarrabeitia Papers consist of four scrapbooks documenting her career as an actress in Cuba in the 1960s and 1970s. The scrapbooks include photographs, theater programs, contracts, scripts, and clippings.
The papers document professional activities of Carlos Felipe in a capacity of a playwright and of Rosa Felipe in a capacity of an actress. The materials consist of manuscripts of Carlos Felipe's plays, in which he deals with human passions, giving his characters essential Cuban elements. Some of the plays were published in Spain, while others were published in Cuba. The manuscripts of the following plays are included in the papers: "Esta noche en el bosque," for which he received Premio Nacional de Teatro in 1939, "Tambores," and "De pelicula." A copy of "El Chino," published by Repertorio Teatral Cubano and a published miniature of "Capricho en rojo" are also included in this collection. The collection also contains academic essays by other authors about Carlos Felipe's plays, especially about "Réquiem por Yarini" in which Carlos Felipe utilizes structure of Greek tragedy. Materials include clippings with interviews with Carlos Felipe, theatre programs, especially the programs of the several productions of "Réquiem por Yarini" and theatrical reviews.
The materials also document acting career of Rosa Felipe who worked in Cuba, Madrid, Latin America and Miami. Rosa Felipe worked with other Cuban actors in exile in Miami for the theatre group Repertorio Español. The bulk of the material documenting Rosa Felipe's career consists of photographs from Cuban TV, theatre and award receiving events. Moreover, the collection contains Certificates of Recognition, membership cards, slides and theatre programs of productions featuring Rosa Felipe.
The papers document professional activities of Blanca Varela in capacity of a soprano. Her vocal range from mezzosoprano to soprano coloratura allowed her to sing parts for various operas, operettas and zarzuelas Cubanas. The materials consist of theatre programs from her performances in operas, operettas and zarzuelas mostly in the Dade County Auditorium. The collection also includes copies of photographs representing theatre performances with Blanca Varela singing in operas, operettas and zarzuelas for Teatro Nacional in Havana and for Cuban TV. Moreover, the collection includes published scores with Varela's notes on them, manuscripts of musical scores, manuscripts of poems, L'Elisir D'Amore with annotations, newspaper clippings, a list of her recordings , a booklet describing her biography, and one letter.
The Senator Mel Martinez Papers, donated to the University of Miami in 2010, consist primarily of records created during Martinez’s service as a United States Senator for Florida from 2005 to 2009. Comprised of 89 boxes, the collection includes legislative and committee files, schedules and appointments, correspondence with constituents and colleagues, speeches and floor statements, media coverage, casework files, campaign files, and administrative office records. The collection also includes photographs, audiovisual materials, and electronic records that date primarily from 1998 to 2009, but also includes scans of photographs and memorabilia relating to Martinez’s childhood in Cuba and immigration to the United States. Topics of research include American legislative history, Mel Martinez’s committee assignments, Florida projects, immigration, United States relations with Cuba, services for the elderly, and Florida’s environment, including issues relating to offshore oil drilling.
The Arva Moore Parks photograph collection consists of images of Cuban exile owned restaurants, stores and other businesses in Miami in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Leandro Soto Papers consist primarily of original drawings of set and costume designs, audiovisual materials, posters, and photographs of productions and exhibitions documenting the work of visual and performance artist Leandro Soto. While the collection also includes correspondence, clippings, press releases, manuscripts, and theater and exhibitions programs, the bulk of materials relate to Soto’s artistic production in the United States since 1992.
The records consists of copies of the Notes taken by Francisco Xavier de Santa Cruz and his associates from Revista Registers and other sources. The notes consist of alphabetically arranged indexes from the provinces of Las Villas, Matanzas, Camaguey, Habana, Oriente and Pinar del Río of marriages. There are also genealogical notes on many surnames.
The collection contains 15 photographs of “The Fair”, 1 photograph of the Commodore Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium, 28 photographs depicting scenes and people in Miami and Key West, 1 photograph shot in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1 photograph shot in Greece, and 1 photograph shot in Santa Cruz, California .
“The Fair” is a collection of fifteen 9 x 12 inch prints depicting scenes from a fair. According to a description that accompanies the images, they embody “a sense of the dark, unknown, pockets of foreboding within the happy arena of a fair. It is a look into the dark recesses, the fake walls, the grungy barkers, the dangerous looking men that strap you into a ride.” Scenes include rides, games, and food stands, as well as an aerial view of a fair. The images are printed on acid free paper using Epson Ultrachrome inks.
The image of the Commodore Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium is a 17 x 22 inch color print depicting grandstand seating overlooking the water. The stadium was constructed on Virginia Key in the 1964 and was initially used for powerboat racing. The stadium closed in 1992 following Hurricane Andrew.
The papers document activities of Delfín Rodríguez Silva as a reporter. The bulk of materials includes two scrapbooks with articles published by newspapers, mostly in New York and in other North-Eastern cities in the United States, about various Cuban organizations during the early years of exile. The materials also include a report written by Rodríguez Silva and clippings about Cuban birds.
The Rosario Rexach papers document professional activities of Rosario Rexach, a deceased Cuban exile author of books and essays on Spanish and Latin-American literature and art with focus on Cuba's history and literature. Materials include manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, typescripts from conferences, programs, certificates, articles and photographs.
