This series contains letters, orders, receipts, and other documents affiliated with soldiers, officers, and military units. Some of the materials concern military activities, but others are related to the non-military affairs of prominent military figures. The materials represent the American Revolution and the Civil War, as well as other military affairs in the United States and abroad. Included are letters from Benjamin Butler, James Longstreet, Edmund Gaines Pendleton, Matthew Perry, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben, among others.
