Julia P. Herzberg, Ph.D., is an art historian, independent curator, and Fulbright grantee who has taught, lectured, and published extensively both in the United States and internationally. She earned her doctorate from the City University of New York in 1997, with her dissertation titled “Ana Mendieta in Iowa (1969-1978): A Critical Study.” Dr. Herzberg’s research addresses a wide range of cross-disciplinary issues, focusing on artistic processes and the thematic and conceptual concerns of contemporary art. Over her career, she has curated more than thirty-five exhibitions featuring renowned artists such as Carlos Alfonzo, Navjot Altaf, Mónica Bengoa, Máximo Corválan-Pincheira, Leandro Erlich, Paz Errazuriz, Magdalena Fernández, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Kaarina Kaikkonen, Leandro Katz, Wifredo Lam, Iván Navarro, Nela Ochoa, Pepón Osorio, Catalina Parra, Liliana Porter, Raquel Rabinovich, Lotty Rosenfeld, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Juan Sánchez, and Monika Weiss.

The Julia P. Herzberg, Ph.D. collection contains artist portfolios, clippings, and visual arts files.
The collection also contains an interview between Julia P. Herzberg and Helena (Holzer) Benitez, former wife of artist Wifredo Lam from 1944 to 1950. The interview took place on February 7, 1990, at 1125 Park Avenue, New York, NY, then home of Julia P. Herzberg. The discussion centers on Helena's memories of Wifredo’s paintings, his practice, their cultural life in Havana, the artist’s family, his relationship with Lydia Cabrera, and his relationship to Afro-Cubanism.
