"Gibbons, Benjamin. The official publication of the Universal African Nationalist Movement, Inc. New York: Universal African Nationalist Movement, 1948. First Edition. Eighteen monthly issues. Tabloid (most ca. 17" x 11" - 44cm x 29cm). 6-8pp per issue. But for one issue, old newsprint is toned and brittle, with small tears and occassional marginal losses (not affecting text); horizontal folds (as issued); occassional creasing and/or heavy soil; all issues complete and about good. Issue for August 1949 printed on non-acid paper stock and thus about fine... Incomplete but still substatial run of this exceedingly uncommon monthly newspaper devoted to issues of Black nationalism and the Back-to-Africa movement, as well as news of local interest to the Harlem community. The issue for March 1951 bears the quizzical headline: "Kwame Nkruma Released from Prism." Editor Benjmain Gibbons was President of the Unviersal African Nationalistm Movement, of which this was the official organ. Gibbons had been a key figure in the Universal Negro Improvement Association following the departure of Marcus Garvey, presiding over the 1946 annual meeting of the Garvey Club in 1946. Following the dissolution of the original UNIA in early 1949, Gibbons founded his own Nationalist movement, one of several to spin off from the UNIA in 1949-1950." -Lorne Bair Rare Books, Inc
