Biographical history

Jean P. Lesperance joined the University of Miami faculty in 1947. He taught management courses and later served as the director of the Time and Motion Study Laboratory. Beginning in 1952, Lesperance directed a series of annual Time and Motion and Management Conferences, sponsored by the University. These meetings attracted students as well as numerous local and foreign business executives. In addition to teaching, Lesperance lectured at several other universities. He also served a management consultant for industries in Canada, the United States, Cuba and Haiti. He held a position as director of the North American Cigarette Manufacturers, Inc., served as President of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, and joined several professional organizations including the Florida Academy of Science and the Society for the Advancement of Management. Lesperance wrote a book entitled Economics and Techniques of Motion and Time Study, and many of his articles appeared in technical journals.

Scope and content

The Jean P. Lesperance Papers consist of correspondence, articles, book manuscripts, and newspaper clippings relating to the merging field of management studies. Lesperance joined the University of Miami faculty in 1947and taught management courses. He later served as the director of the Time and Motion Study Laboratory.

System of arrangement

SERIES I: CORRESPONDENCE, dated 1955-61.

Includes letters, memoranda, programs and schedules relating to the Annual Time and Motion and Management Conference held at the University of Miami from 1957-61. Other correspondence concerns the Master's program in management, university memos and letters, consulting work, and invitations to speak at other universities.

SERIES II: WRITINGS

Contains articles, copies of Lesperance's book, notes, thesis for the Ph.D. in political science and notes and course outlines.

SERIES III: TOPICAL FILES

Contains several student papers from Lesperance's management course, miscellaneous newspaper clippings, and memos and outlines relating to the job evaluation program.
