On January 19, 1993, the Board of Trustees Executive Committee passed a resolution renaming the Ring Theatre as “The Jerry Herman Theatre Complex,” in honor of Mr. Herman’s professional success, and long-term generosity to and support of the University.

He (born July 10, 1931) is an American composer and lyricist, known for his work in Broadway musical theater. He composed the scores for the hit Broadway musicals. He has been nominated for the Tony Awardfive times, and won twice, for Hello, Dolly!and La Cage aux Folles. In 2009, Herman received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achivement in the Theatre. He is a recipient of the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors.

Pablo Chao is a Cuban American educational professional. Chao graduated from the University of Havana in 1977 with a degree in Information Sciences. After becoming active in educational issues and higher education in the Miami area in the early 1980s, Chao founded the Hispanic-American Cultural Institute of the Koubek Center of the University of Miami in 1984. With the collaboration of Dr. Julio Garcerán de Val, Chao also founded the Instituto de Profesionales Hispanos Retirados, which offered a seasonal program of conferences held at the Koubek Center.

Dathorne, Oscar Ronald, 1934-2007

Oscar Ronald Dathorne (November 19, 1934 – December 18, 2007) was a Guyanese educator, novelist, poet and critic and the eldest brother of the Canadian writer Lynette Dathorne. Born in Georgetown, Guyana he attended Queen’s College prior to his parents moving the family to England in 1953. He attended the University of Sheffield obtaining his BA, English in 1958 later completing his MA in 1960 and PhD, English, in 1966. Dr. Dathorne was a pioneer of Black Studies in the U.S. and was a professor at the University of Miami in the 1980s.

He also developed the curriculum for the Master of Arts in Live Entertainment Industries degree at the Frost School of Music. He introduced the Frost School’s M.M. Program in Media Writing and Production while teaching a host of courses ranging from traditional music theory, to jazz/rock/pop arranging and improvisation, copyright law, and marketing of recorded music. Throughout his long and accomplished career, he has written more than 80 books and 50 publications, and has held numerous roles ranging from educator to conference organizer, consultant, speaker, pianist, conductor, arranger, script writer, and much more. He retired in May 2010.
