University of Miami Citizens Board

"Established in 1946, the University of Miami Citizens Board is a select group of more than 250 business, professional, and civic leaders who actively support the University's philanthropic efforts and promote UM programs. Since its inception, the Citizens Board has raised an estimated $454 million for the University and advanced 97 CB members to the University’s Board of Trustees.

Membership is by invitation only. We count on each member to make an annual unrestricted contribution to the University and to secure funds from other individuals, corporations and foundations. Members expand their knowledge of the University through firsthand contact with students, faculty, administrators, and facilities on all of the University's campuses. University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences, originally called the College of Liberal Arts, was one of the first two academic units of the University of Miami. It opened in the fall of 1926 with the aim of covering all subjects except music and art and is now the largest college of the University.

The College was established as a community of scholars and students that to this day encourages the quest for a deeper understanding of the human experience and fosters a personal commitment to lifelong learning, intellectual growth, and the enduring values of the liberal arts.

University of Miami College of Engineering

The College of Engineering (previously named the School of Engineering) was established in 1947. The College is housed in the McArthur Engineering building, a 120,000-square-foot complex with state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, which is comprised of five departments that offer BS, MS, PhD and executive education programs in Biomedical Engineering; Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and Industrial Engineering. The College of Engineering is recognized for the quality and diversity of its faculty, students, and curricula and is noted for educating tomorrow’s technology leaders for career success.

The Ungar Computer Center houses the University's central computing facilities. In addition to the mini and microcomputers located at various units on each campus, there are over 40 computer labs (both IBM and Apple) in residential colleges, libraries, and schools; and campus networks including network connectivity in each dorm room, and gateways to national and international networks.

The Council of Administrators, composed of high-level personnel from all divisions of the University, was primarily a discussion group for an exchange of ideas. If consensus could be reached, it was possible for decisions to be made which could then become policy.

The Department of Art and Art History provides facilities and instruction to serve equally the needs of the general student for participation in and appreciation of the visual arts and those of students with specialized interests and abilities preparing for careers in the production, teaching, utilization, and interpretation of art and art history.

The Industrial Education Department is now part of the the College of Engineering.  The College grew out of an engineering science major in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1942 to 1947, when the Board of Trustees established the School of Enginering with Professor John H. Clouse as Dean.  It opened with the electrical, industrial, and mechanical engineering departments, followed by civil in 1948 and architectural in 1950.  The school was housed in the old Anastasia Building in the first 12 years, then moved to the McArthur Bilding on Main Campus in 1959.

University of Miami. Department of Microbiology and Immunology

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a basic science, research-oriented unit within the University of Miami School of Medicine. The department consists of 42 faculty members, approximately 45 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and a technical staff of 45. Departmental research efforts are supported by a number of core units including flow cytometry, transgenic/knockout, sequencing, imaging, and stem cell/hematopoiesis facilities. In addition to studying basic microbiological and immunological questions, the department also directs the Gene Transfer Immunotherapy Program together with physicians from the Division of Hematology and Oncology and maintains close ties with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Diabetes Research Institute through collaborative projects. Members of the department share a common belief that complex biological and medical questions are best solved by integrating investigators with differing expertise and perspectives.

In 1947, Frank J. Rimoldi, a professor of applied tropical botany who taught landscape and conservation, began the arboretum on the University of Miami campus with a teaching collection of 250 trees and 100 shrubs. In 1949, the Arboretum was named in honor and memory of Dr. John C. Gifford, the first graduate forester in the United States, an expert on tropical woods and influential professor of tropical forestry. By 1951, the Arboretum, under the guidance of Chairman of the Botany Department, Taylor Alexander, had expanded to over 500 species.
