Album Martiniquais

"A very rare set of a dozen lithograph views of Martinique after eleven photographs by Hippolyte Hartmann and one drawing by Michel-Jean Cazabon, set on stone by Eugène Cicéri in Paris circa 1860. The Alsatian Hartmann and his son worked as photographers in the Caribbean and on the Atlantic coast of South America, 'As was necessary, since in the mid-nineteenth century the residents of any one island could not support a full time photographer' - Getty. They seem to have travelled often with Cazabon, a Creole artist regarded as the first great Trinidadian painter, with whom they also published a second lithograph view book depicting Demerara." -- Librería de Antaño

Photo album and scrapbook: National Geographic aerial survey of the coast of South America

"A photo album and scrapbook compiled by Kenneth Price in 1974, documenting a National Geographic aerial survey of the coast of South American taken in 1930. The album, entitled Flight of the Argentina, contains long narrative captions by Price along with his original photographs and clippings. According to Price's introduction, '[this is] a photo and memo album of a National Geographic aerial survey of the East Coast of South America (Nat Geo Dec. 1930, Jan. 1931). This was inspired after reading 'A Dream of Eagles' by Col. Ralph A. O'Neill...and a collection of my own pictures (many have been lost). It is made up of clippings and pictures from two magazine articles; and my own pictures (taken with a Brownie 2-A) plus memos, letters, and clippings.' He continues 'After two months building aircraft radio equipment for NYRBA (New York Rio & Bueno Aires), I was selected as radio operator for the 26 passenger seaplane Argentine and took off from North Beach, Long Island, New York, May 21st 1930.' Price then lists the other crew for the expedition which included, among others, Frederick Simpich, an American writer, newspaperman, and Assistant Editor of the National Geographic Society from 1931 to 1949. During his time in the society, he wrote more articles for the magazine than anyone else before or after this time.

The survey began in New York and went to Miami, Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Trinidad, British Guiana, Dutch Guiana, French Guiana, Brazil, and Uruguay. Each stop features Price's memories of the time, clippings from contemporary newspapers and the National Geographic articles, and photographs. Price underlines parts of the articles he feels caption the images and explain each leg of the journey. On a page from a stop in St. Thomas an article read, 'viewed from the sky, these islands are strangely beautiful. Only God's own hands could form these gracefully molded emerald hills and set them in turquoise seas with foamy waves as a white fringe about dark-green shores.' Another later article reads, 'from the air, you see how close primeval forests crowd Para. Its streets end in the jungle. We stopped here five days to overhaul our plane, and when we got ashore, we saw more clearly how utterly the vast forests of Brazil dominate the life of the greatest city on the Amazon.'

Price ends this portion of the album writing, 'our 4 month geographic survey is over. I will return with plane 'Argentina' to Rio. This will be my base for air and passengers runs to Bahia 1100 miles to the north of Rio. Stops at Campos, Vitoria, Ilheus, and Salvador.' Once the National Geographic crew had gone back to the United States, Price 'remained with the Argentina,' now assigned to mail and passenger runs in Brazil until P.A.A. (Pan American Airlines) and a revolution upset everything and I returned to N.Y.C. by boat from Rio.' The final few pages document Price's work during this time and include a memo from Pan American retaining his services. A page featuring photographs of Brazilian crowds reads, 'our last trip from Bahia arriving in Rio we got the news that Bahia was being sacked the day after we left. A Brazilian revolution had begun. Crowds gathered in the streets of Rio and bedlam soon took over.' He continues, 'not being able to speak Portuguese I could not get the details. We could roam the streets but at times it was dangerous when the shooting started.' The album ends with two typed letters signed by author Ralph A. O'Neill, whose book inspired the making of the scrapbook.

A n extensive album documenting a first-hand account of a National Geographic aerial survey of the Caribbean and east coast of South America." --description form Between the Covers Rare Books, Inc.

The album contains views of Panamanian cities and environs, including Panama City and Colón. Photographs of Panama City show street scenes (Avenida Central, a lottery event, buildings with signs reading 'Tropical Radio Telegraph Co.,' 'Cecilia,' 'Club Nocturno,' etc.), Plaza Cinco de Mayo, the former Central Railway station, the University of Panama, the National Lottery Building, the Palacio de las Garzas (presidential residence), the National Theatre of Panama, Santa Ana Church, San Francisco Church, Paseo de las Bovedas, the flat arch of the Santo Domingo Convent, and the ruins of Panama Viejo. Of Colón, they show Mount Hope Cemetery, Hotel Washington, the Municipal Park, and street views. Thirty four photographs show Carnival in Panama City in February 1944, and 28 photographs show the 'Sacred Heart Procession' near the San Francisco Church in July 1944. There are also photos of Chitre (exterior and interior of St. John Baptist Cathedral, a plaza, a cemetery, 'Hotel International,' and a public market), Portobelo ('Modern Portobelo,' the local ruins, a cemetery, and Church of San Felipe), U.S. military housing in Diablo, Santa Clara (the beach, cabins, and huts), Gamboa ('Gold school,' a country club, U.S. military housing, views of Chagres River), Parque Municipal Summit in Central Panama, and Barro Colorado Island (biological research island in the middle of the Panama Canal).

Over 40 photographs show the Guna, an indigenous people of Panama, in a village likely in the San Blas Islands (northeast coast of Panama). The photographs include street scenes of the village, Guna women and children with the compiler and her friends, men swimming, dugout canoes, and a signpost reading 'sociedad eclesistica [church membership].' Other photographs are of the compiler and her friends and family in Panama and Utah. The piece of ephemera is a print caption previously attached to a loosely inserted group portrait of the attendees of a party, titled 'M.I.A Party, Canal Zone Branch, Nov. 7, 1944.' The caption identifies all people in the photograph as well as the photographer.

Overall, an extensive and lively album showing Panama during the latter half of World War II." --description from Wayfarer's Bookshop.

Album with 140 original gelatin silver vernacular photographs and panoramas, showing Panama City

"Historically interesting, extensive collection of early original photographs of the Panama Canal, Caracas and Port of Spain in Trinidad. Most likely compiled by an American traveler in the 1900s. The album starts with several views of Panama City, showing the Metropolitan Cathedral, La Merced Church, Tivoli Hotel, railway station, city streets and residential areas. Four excellent large panoramas and about eighteen smaller snapshot photos depict the earth- and construction-works on the Panama Canal. Among the identified images of Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago) are large views of the Government House and a wharf, and a series of smaller photos, showing the business district, a corner of Frederick Street with Maillard's 'El Popular' store and Belmont street car, the city harbour, a man dressed up for Carnival, etc. The album also contains large, well-executed views of Caracas, Venezuela: A panorama with the Miraflores Palace, the old campus of the University, Plaza Bolivar with Simon Bolivar's equestrian statue, and a portrait of a group of local men and kids with the Miraflores Palace in the far right. The other photos show a port with the hangar with the sign 'Panama Railroad Co.'s Pier No. 4,' railway stations and trains, horse-driven tram cars, a public gathering near a shore office of a cable car line, residential and administrative buildings (most likely in the Panama Canal Zone), city streets, harbors, churches and cathedrals, scenes with travelers dining, conversing with other Europeans or Americans, etc." --description from the The Wayfarer's Bookshop

Photo album of a 1913 vacation cruise through the Caribbean, compiled by Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph Donovan, and presented to their daughter Geraldine Goodheart Donovan

"A delightful and well-produced souvenir photograph album of a 1913 vacation cruise through the Caribbean, compiled by Mr. and Mrs. John Joseph Donovan, and presented to their daughter Geraldine Goodheart Donovan on the title leaf. In an interesting form of quasi-publication, the introduction and an explanatory text are printed and mounted opposite original photographs. In a printed note titled 'Our Trip' mounted to the verso of the title page, the Donovans explain that 'these notes and pictures of our trip to Panama, the West Indies and Caracas are prepared as a souvenir for a few personal friends and relatives.' The photographs are arranged according to each location they visited, with each section beginning with a short printed commentary by them. The Donovans sailed upon the VICTORIA LUISE, a 'floating hotel' from which they observed the South Atlantic and Caribbean. Captions mounted with the photos chart the journey from the moment they leave New York on March 11, 1913 to just before they head home on the train. In between, the album is filled with wonderful images of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Panama, Venezuela, Trinidad, Barbados, Martinique, and St. Thomas. Highlights of the photographs include Morro Castle and several street scenes in Havana; Caguas Church in San Juan; Nelson Monument in Kingston; a handful of shots showing completion work on the Panama Canal, namely Gatun Lake and the Culebra Cut; a view of Caracas from Columbus Monument; a shot of ten children in Trinidad labeled 'Pickaninnies;' a sugar cane field in Barbados; a market scene in Fort-de-France, Martinique; and Bluebeard's Tower in St. Thomas. In addition to the photographs of the various locales, there are also several photographs showing on-deck activities including tug-of-war, a pillow fight, 'Girls' Nail-Driving,' and more. An attractive photographic record of a wonderful trip from New York, through the Caribbean, and back again, produced at no small expense to the travelers, evidenced by the arrangement of the photographs and the printed personalized commentary that opens each section." --- From William Reese Company

There are also interesting images of the lives of the wealthy white passengers on the ship, including images of lavish tea services. The rest of the album focuses on Hamilton and St. George's in Bermuda, including many photos of local landmarks and nature sights. Photo album: Couples travel album to the Caribbean in the 1930s during the Trinidad Hurricane

"Oblong quarto measuring 13' x 10'. Screw bound black leather boards with gilt decorations. Contains 106 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1.5' x 1' and 9' x 6.5' without captions.

An aesthetically pleasing photo album of a couple's vacation to Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, circa the 1930s. The album starts with a hand drawn illustration of a woman. From there, the photographs are of various places around San Fernando, Trinidad, and Tobago. Most of the photographs include a smaller gelatin silver photograph sized 1.5' x 1' and a larger blown up and printed version of the photograph. The Nariva ferry is one of the first pictures seen before several photographs of baby pictures. The album then focuses on the flora and working class of the island. Pictures of flowers, forest trails, and rivers can be seen stretching for miles, all of which are well shot. Some cities are also photographed, possibly from overhead as many twinkling lights can be seen in the photograph. There are several pictures of the working class on the island with shots of them getting water or working in a hay mill. There are several candid shots of people, one of a man praying, some of young girls smiling, and an interesting photograph of a little boy with a boa constrictor wrapped around his neck and body.

The couple also takes pictures of each other with shots of them wakeboarding and enjoying the beach, one of which shows the woman in front of the setting sun creating a silhouette of her shape in an aesthetically pleasing photograph. Another shows the couple visiting an airfield with well shot photographs of the planes. There is a portrait shot of the wife that was printed and negatives of the husband holding the couple's dogs, which are pictured again in a larger photograph. Towards the end there are several photos of damage left from the Trinidad hurricane with roofs peeled off of buildings and just the frames of houses left up with the wife looking dismayed around the rubble.

There are some random photographs that looks like they may have been used in magazine advertising as one shows a turkey with loves of bread for Thanksgiving and another shows small clay penguins posed next to a box of 'Kool Cigarettes.'" --Description from Between the Covers Rare Books

Other photographs include the picnic area, beer garden and canteen, boat dock, administrative building, Chief Petty Officers Clubhouse, and scenes at the Rainbow Canteen. Several photos show the crew members of USS Brooklyn and USS Guam during their shore leave participating in sports and picnics. Four photos are of Eleanor Roosevelt's tour of Scotland Bay Recreation Area while she was visiting Naval Base Trinidad in 1944. The newspaper clippings are likely from papers circulated locally or within the U.S. forces, with stories or photos of the recreation area. Several clippings mention or feature Wolf.

Album with circa 320 original gelatin photographic prints documenting oil exploration and drilling

"Historically significant extensive collection of early original photos, dedicated to oil drilling in Colombia, Texas, and Louisiana in the 1920s. The album documents the activities of a noted Texan oilman James Smither Abercrombie and was apparently compiled by his business partner, or a family member, possibly his younger brother Robert Haden Abercrombie. James Abercrombie started working in the Texan oil industry in 1909 and by 1918, had enough money to drill for oil in South Texas and the Gulf Coast on his own. The images show workers unloading drilling machinery at Puerto Escondido, ferrying it across the Sinu River to Monteria, Abercrombie and his partners in the camps at Tubara and Lorencita, drilling rigs under construction, oil holding tanks, the Sinu River, a 'mud volcano' in Lorencita, and many images of local villages and their inhabitants, etc. A smaller group of photos at the rear illustrate Abercrombies later drilling operations at Lake Pelto and Lake Barre (Louisiana), and Dog Lake and Taylor Bayou (Texas), showing piled up pipes, equipment, drills, construction workers, etc." --description from the The Wayfarer's Bookshop
