A collection of 47 black and white prints (17 x 11 in.) of Alberto Sisso's photography. "Metamorphosis"

"The pictures on this series depict a group of artists getting ready for a play about the legacy of Florence Foster Jenkins. Ms. Jenkins was many things, but overall, she represents the freedom to be who you are. Although, she was the recipient of some of the silliest music criticism of all time; she became an icon for standing your ground regardless of what others might think.

These images take this message a step further by challenging traditional gender roles and emphasizing the universal themes of Jenkins' story. By casting men in the role of Jenkins, the images showcase the power of individual expression and the freedom to be oneself, regardless of gender identity or societal expectations. Men dressing as women in Latin America in the 1970s was not visible or accepted. These scenes were linked to an underground movement that supported the LGBTQ+ communities, and that often met with stigma and discrimination.

In Metamorphosis, I thrived to expose the deep melancholy of the moment, as well as the enduring love for the magnificent theatrical gesture. I looked for images that capture the bond between the artist and the person's essence. The looser frame allowed me to create compositions that transcended the image from its ordinary status into something unique. With each take I was hoping to deliver a particular emotion, kind of a blend of something classic with an everlasting experience. A way in which we can all see ourselves echoed in, not as a cliché nostalgic approach, but more in a reflective manner.

"Nuevos Espacios"

"In the 1980s, the art scene in Caracas was booming, and the Contemporary Art Museum was at the forefront of the movement. Led by her director, Sofia Imber, the museum embarked on a much-needed expansion project, named Los Nuevos Espacios, which would go on to become an iconic institution in the city.

Imber was a trailblazer in the art world of Venezuela, and her dedication to promoting and supporting Venezuelan artists was evident throughout her career. Under her leadership, the Contemporary Art Museum became a hub for the country's avant-garde art scene, showcasing the works of both established and up-and-coming artists.

I had the privilege to document the night of the inauguration of Los Nuevos Espacios. It was a momentous occasion, and one that would go down in history. The walls of the museum were filled with the work of some of the most prominent artists of the time, including Alejandro Otero, Jesús Soto, and Carlos Cruz-Diez; and its corridors where packed with the best of the Venezuelan society. Representatives from the artistic milieu, politicians, entrepreneurs, and mainly art supporters and art lovers were present to bear witness of the making of the country’s modern history (the captions on each image list the names of some of the personalities in attendance).

Imber, beaming with pride, took the podium to give a speech, expressing her gratitude to everyone who had made the project a reality. For her, the expansion of the museum was more than just a physical transformation. It was a symbol of the evolution of Venezuelan society and the country's commitment to promoting and celebrating its cultural heritage. The museum was a testament to Imber's lifelong dedication to the arts and her unwavering belief in the power of creativity to transform communities. Imber's legacy continues to inspire and influence the arts in Venezuela, it lives on through the museum and the countless artists whose careers she helped launch. Sofía Imber was a visionary and true champion of the arts.

This series stand tall as a testament of the cultural memory of Venezuela, reminding future generations of the impact that Nuevos Espacios and Imber had on the art world."

"Being There"

"Jerzy Kosiński was a Polish-American writer who was known for his novels, including "Being There" and "The Painted Bird." In the 1980s, he was invited to Venezuela by the Diego Cisneros organization to participate in a cultural exchange program. As part of this program, Kosiński visited the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Caracas, which is one of the most important museums of contemporary art in Latin America, a must see stop and a city pride for all Venezuelans.

Kosiński's visit to Venezuela was part of a larger effort by the Diego Cisneros organization to promote cultural exchange between Venezuela and the United States. His visit to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo was a significant cultural event, and it helped to strengthen the ties between the two countries in the realm of the arts. This series documents that visit."

The Rene Jordan papers contain manuscripts and clippings of film critiques by Cuban-born, New York City-based film critic Rene Jordan (d. 2013) published primarily in the Miami, Florida-based El Nuevo Herald.

The majority of the collection consists of clippings of the final versions of film critiques the Jordan wrote for his column in the Miami Heraldand El Nuevo Herald. Most of the reviews are written in Spanish. A small portion of the materials includes original typescript draft manuscripts of Jordan's film critiques.

The Juan Jose Remos Papers contain the personal documents of Cuban journalist and politician Juan Jose Remos. They include clippings, correspondence, books on Cuban literature and poetry, booklets, scrapbooks, photographs, posters, and unpublished manuscripts. The clippings and written material are mostly collected from Remos' time in exile, written by him and others, detailing Cuban exile culture and political sentiment in Miami. Some material from Remos' time in the Cuban government, mostly photos and correspondence, is also available.

The Rafael Baserva Soler Papers contain the personal materials of Cuban pianist, bandleader and composer Rafael Baserva Soler. They include CDs, vinyl, and cassette tapes of Soler’s music and performances, photographs of Soler and musical figures he worked with, sheet music, concert programs, pamphlets, and newspaper reviews.

This collection contains annual reports, memorabilia, news articles, reports, certificates, meeting minutes, photographs, legislative documents, signs, and materials from the Undergraduate Student Body Government (USBG), which had been collected and maintained by the former Vice President for Student Affairs of University of Miami, William R. Butler. This collection also contains the series of interviews, captured on VHS and U-matic, that he conducted while working at University of Miami.

The Enrique Caravia Montenegro Papers contain correspondence, receipts and photographs and memorabilia collected by Enrique Caravia Montenegro (1905-1992), a Cuban artist active in the mid-1900s.

The collection contains letters written to and collected by Caravia from international and Cuban artists; receipts from the Patronato de Artes Plásticas in Havana for artworks commissioned by the organization; and photographs of artists and artworks.

The Guillermo González collection contains materials documenting the engineering career and personal life of Cuban engineer Guillermo González (1932-2013), including slides, photographs and images, memorabilia, personal papers, and audiovisual materials.

These materials include slide collections, photographs, postcards, advertisements, tourist brochures, and ceramic plates from famous Cuban locales. The collection also contains materials documenting González's career as an engineer, such as awards, engineering essays, and blueprints, most from his time in Miami, but some materials do date from his time in Cuba. While most of this collection’s slides, photographs, audiovisual materials, and memorabilia document life in Cuba, the personal papers document González’s life in both Cuba and in Miami. Other materials include play scripts and videotapes on subjects that were of personal interest to González.

González's extensive collection of slides have been maintained in the original order that they were created. Most of the slides are organized into slide books and each binder is further divided into thematic tabs, which are identified in the container list in this finding aid. A small amount of slides were in slide projector decks, which have been kept together in folders accompanied by the slideshow notes. Box 10 contains photographic prints from slide negatives that González donated to the Cuban Heritage Collection previously.

The Sara Yaballi Papers contain the correspondence and other materials of Sara Yaballi, head nurse at Camp Matecumbe in West Dade, FL during Operation Pedro Pan during from 1961-1962.

The collection primarily consists of correspondence from Pedro Pans and their families to Sara Yaballi from 1961-1963.  Also included are prayers and an autograph book.

The Operation Pedro Pan Group, Inc. Collection comprises materials in relation to Operation Pedro Pan gathered by its members from 1971 to 2013.

The collection consists of the Historical Structure Form Florida Master Site Plan for the Florida City Camp which includes site plans, an extensive Pedro Pan bibliography and addendums. Also in the collection are memorabilia of Operation Pedro Pan Group, Inc. events, including its 50th anniversary events; multimedia such as interviews, documentaries and musical recordings; newspaper clippings of the Pedro Pan experience and people; and academic materials.

The Harold Butler Papers contain documents and photographs relating to engineering in Cuba and the American Clubs of Havana and Miami collected by Harold Butler (1895-1983), an American engineer living in Cuba from the 1920s to the 1960s.

The collection contains photographs from events held by the Asociación de Ingenieros Cubanos and an exile membership directory, along with material relating to activities of the American Club in Miami, including a history of the club, rosters from the 1970s and 1980s and bulletins from the 1960s and 1970s.

A collection of periodicals, pamphlets, brochures, tracts, leaflets, broadsides, and assorted materials, focusing on social movements across the globe. The collection presently includes materials from various organizations, mostly French, Iranian, African-American groups fighting for social rights and liberties, pro-environmentalist/anti-capitalist groups, and socialist groups, and will continue to expand as materials are collected.

The approximately 3,000 playbills and programs in the collection include those published by Playbill magazine, souvenir brochures from Broadway, off-Broadway, and international productions, and programs from lesser-known professional theaters as well as amateur performances. The majority of these date from the 1960s through the early 2000s.
