Julia Dawson is a feminist activist and retired lawyer born and raised in Miami, Florida. Through correspondence, documents, ephemera, and other records, this collection documents Dawson's activism, organizational work, and campaigns from the 1970s through the 2010s around feminism, civil rights, and LGBTQ+ rights. Organizations and campaigns represented in this collection include: National Organization for Women (NOW); Dade County Chapter of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers; SAVE Dade (LGBTQ+ rights activism); American Civil Liberties Union Miami Chapter (ACLU), including the ACLU Miami Chapter’s Police Practices Committee (PPC); Miami Clinic Access Project (reproductive rights); Miami Workers Center (MWC); and Serve the People.
A local poet who grew up in Manhattan and resided in Miami Beach, Florida for the latter years of her life, Judith Anne Berke (Sep 9, 1931 - Jul 24, 2013) wrote and published several works that embody the spirit of Florida, its unique history and its people. She attended Smith College in her youth and began writing when she was 49 years of age then published her first book in 1989. Outside of writing, she studied painting at l'Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris and was a skilled sculptor. She also studied acting, designed puppets, and sang in the Opera Guild of Greater Miami, demonstrating a huge breadth of talent that spanned many disciplines.
Her papers include her manuscripts, drafts, and poems either in notebooks or in typescripts. Also included are some of her scrapbooks and a sculpted bust.
Juanita Greene was a Miami Herald reporter and South Florida environmentalist. The collection consists of letters sent to Juanita Greene in response to a 1970 column in the Miami Herald requesting readers' thoughts on the current status of the Miami Metropolitan Transportation Services. The letters are subdivided into folders by topic, ranging thematically from complaints about smoking to inefficient service to the behavior of other ethnic and cultural groups on the buses.
The Juana Rosa Pita papers consists of personal papers of Cuban-American poet Juana Rosa Pita, including manuscripts, correspondence, posters, event flyers, musical scores, Vigia items, and a thesis for the Universidad Federal do Rio Grande in Brazil.
The Juana de Arcos Babun Collection contains several scrapbooks with newspaper clippings and photographs that Juana de Arcos Babun kept relating to the Babun family. Much of the collection focuses on Lincoln, Santiago, and Teofilo Babun Franco, Juana's nephews who served in Brigade 2506.
The papers consist of the manuscripts of Cuban songs written by Juan Valdés Terán in Cuban prison where he was held as a political prisoner for many years, correspondence, clippings, memorabilia and photographs.
The collection contains poems, two recorded university events in 1973, and a plaque of Juan Ramon Jimenez (1881-1958), who was a Spanish poet received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956. He and his wife Zenobia Camprubi lived in Miami from 1939 to 1942, and he taught classes and lectured at the University of Miami from 1940 to 1942.
The first audio tape is titled "Juan Ramon Jimenez Program (titled Tribute on the reel) by UM Students" held at Richter Library's Brockway Lecture Hall on October 11, 1973. The second tape is titled "Jimenez Event" on October 13, 1973. The tapes are in 1/4 reel-to-reel format. Recording speed and length are unknown. They are not digitized and transcripts of the recordings are not available.
A bronze plaque was dedicated by the University of Miami on October 12, 1973, which reads "Juan Ramon Jimenez, 1881-1958, Nobel Prize in Literature 1956, Lecturer in Spanish in this university 1940-1942, "Quisiera que mi libro fuese, como es el cielo for la noche, todo verdad resente, sin historia." The size of the plaque is 11x14 inches.
A 4-page note card (4.5x7.75 inches) printed in black and white contains a poster "Centenario de Juan Ramon Jimenez 1881-1981," two handwritten poems, a picture of the plaque held at the University of Miami Library, and his statue at Colegio Nacional in Vitoria, Alava.
A 20-page booklet (5.75x8 inches) printed in black and white contains a self-portrait and 19 handwritten and typed poems.
The Juan M. Clark Memorial Lecture Series Collection contains DVD recordings of lectures presented at the University of Miami's Institute of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies (ICCAS) by leading exile figures on topics pertaining to Cuban politics and culture.
Juan M. Clark (1938-2013) was a Cuban sociologist and professor emeritus of Miami Dade College. A veteran of the Bay of Pigs invasion, Clark was imprisoned by the Cuban government from January to December 1962. He authored several books on human rights abuses in Cuba.
The collection contains a letter, envelopes and a medallion relating to Cuban senator, mayor, and historian Manuel Martínez-Moles (1863-1951). The collection also includes a copy of "Manuel Martínez-Moles" written by Dr. Juan L. Riera for The Cuban Philatelist. Subsequent donations have included photographs of Cuban monuments in Miami, taken in 2020; restaurant and culinary ephemera; clippings and articles related to philately and Cuban historical figures such as José María Heredia, Félix Varela, León Primelles, and José Martí, authored by Dr. Riera; exhibition ephemera; political flyers; documents related to the Cuban communities in Ybor City and Key West; conference materials related to the InterAmerican Institute for Democracy, held in August 2022; and tourism ephemera. The collection also contains memorabilia such as matchbooks and cigarette ration coupons.
The Juan Jose Remos Papers contain the personal documents of Cuban journalist and politician Juan Jose Remos. They include clippings, correspondence, books on Cuban literature and poetry, booklets, scrapbooks, photographs, posters, and unpublished manuscripts. The clippings and written material are mostly collected from Remos' time in exile, written by him and others, detailing Cuban exile culture and political sentiment in Miami. Some material from Remos' time in the Cuban government, mostly photos and correspondence, is also available.
The majority of the collection consists of official publications documenting a variety of facets of Perón's political career, including his involvement in the 1943-1946 military government, his first two presidential terms (1946-1955) and his third (1973-1974). Most of these official publications are reports on his policies and political activities, his own writings, or transcripts of speeches. Several of these record conjoined efforts by Perón and Eva, his well-known first wife, as well as with Chilean president Carlos Ibáñez Del Campo.
Also contained in the collection are pamphlets and other materials which treat Peronism (or Justicialism) and its critics; two series of satirical pro-Peronist periodicals called "Alpargatas Humorísticas" (6 issues) and "Descamisada" (31 issues); 8 postcards which depict aspects of Eva Perón's social work; two paper masks of Juan Domingo Perón and Eva Perón; two autographed photographs of Juan Domingo Perón and Eva Perón; and other ephemera.
The bulk of materials consist of magazines with articles about ballet in Cuba and Alicia Alonso, Cuba's prima ballerina whose ballet company became the Ballet Nacional de Cuba in 1955. Materials also include theatre programs and clippings.
The Juan Clark Collection contains research materials for two projects conducted by Juan Clark (1938-2013), a "sociological analysis of the Cuban exodus" and a study of living conditions in totalitarian Cuba, including newspaper clippings, magazine articles and other periodicals collected by Dr. Clark as part of his research activities since the 1960s.
The collection also contains draft manuscripts of the English translation of Clark's book Cuba: mito y realidad(1992) and La visita del Papa a Cuba y su repercusión (1999).
The Juan Boza papers contain clippings, photographs, legal documents, press releases, correspondence, resumes and programs related to Cuban artist Juan Boza (1941-1991), mostly during his time in exile in New York City, New York.
The Juan Arcocha Papers contain manuscripts and notes for books written by the 20th century Cuban philosopher Juan Arcocha (1927-2010).
The collection contains drafts of Arcocha's work in Spanish, French and English, including Los muertos andan solos (1962), Por cuenta propia(1970) and Tatiana y los hombres abundantes (1982), as well as notebooks with handwritten versions of Arcocha's work.
The Juan A. del Regato collection consists of theses, publications, awards, lectures, and general information pertaining to several Cuban medical students who graduated from the Université de Paris from 1929 to 1940, among other material found in Juan A. del Regato's personal papers.
The Joseph Spencer Kennard Papers includes correspondence, a scrapbook, and the manuscript of A Literary History of the Italian People (1940) by Joseph Spencer Kennard (1859-1944), author of several books about Italian literature and theater.
The Joseph Middlebrooks papers includes many of his research documents, administrative files, plaques, awards, drafts, development plans, architectural drawings, urban and development reports, portfolios, clippings, correspondence, audio-visual materials, and other materials related to his life's work.
Joseph L. Herndon (1948-2021) was a historical preservationist who aided in several global restoration projects, including the Old Spanish Fort (1730) in Pascagoula, Mississippi; Qasr Ibrihim (1600's) in Hoffuf, Saudi Arabia; the Old Post Office (1897) in Washington, D.C.; The Rugby Colony (1880's) in Rugby, Tennessee; Union Station (1900) in Nashville, Tennessee; The Germantown neighborhood revitalization (1840's) in Nashville, Tennessee; The Biltmore Hotel (1926) in Miami, Florida. His papers include a large breadth of information and research pertaining to the Biltmore Hotel, the Panama Canal, Turkey, the Deering Estate, resorts, and other areas of interest to Joseph Herndon. Material types represented within include audio-visual materials (CD-ROMS, VHS, photographs, slides), print-outs, administrative files, financial files, travel brochures, ephemera, architectural plans, interior design samples, research files, reports, proposals, periodicals, and 3D objects.
