Correspondence and Correspondent Files

Letters and other correspondence including manuscripts, clippings, programs and other items sent and received by Fulgencio Batista. Sub-series A through D contain extensive correspondence and related documents mainly from important figures. Sub-series E contains correspondence grouped by affiliation.

Works: Manuscripts and Notes

Manuscripts of works by Fulgencio Batista, related research notes and other materials, including: synopsis or outline; research material and notes; bibliographies; drafts; translations and foreign editions; galley proofs; revisions; related materials: advertisements, publicity, press releases and reviews. The series also inludes manuscripts by others. Subseries A and B contain manuscripts by Batista of published and unpublished works each with related materials; C has research notes of unidentified materials; D has works by others. Works by Fulgencio Batista in alphabetical order by title; works by others in alphabetical order by title within author’s name.

Documents collected by Batista under the title “Documentos varios” not related to his publications. Sub-series A contains depositions given to the US Congress by former US Ambassadors to Cuba; B includes documents and correspondence related to the so-called “Plan Torriente” proposed by José Elías de la Torriente to liberate Cuba; C has transcripts and notes of the 1956 and 1967 Meetings of the American Chiefs of State; D is comprised by statistics mainly about agriculture and other aspects of the Cuban economy; E contains press releases from various agencies primarily related to Cuban politics; F contains memorabilia about his political campaigns; G groups other memorabilia; H contains other documents mainly related to the Batista government administrative aspects and public works. Subseries A is in alphabetical order by name of deponent; B, C, D, F and G in chronological order; E by topic (e.g. Batista government, Cuban Refugees, etc.); H by institution or association (e.g. Organization of American States, “ONCEP, Organización Nacional de Comedores Escolares Populares”).

Photographs not selected for Series I, including photos of Fulgencio Batista, official portraits and groups, and other photographs of the Batista government associates, public works and events of that era. Photographs are arranged in chronological order by decade within Sub-series and sub-subseries ; A & further subdivided by categories such as ‘portraits’, ‘group photographs’ ‘official events and visits’, etc. under each sub-series; I grouped by subject sub-subseries with folders listed alphabetically by name; sub-subseries 2, public works, arranged in broad categories by type of work (e.g. bridges, roads).

Sub-series A and B: Transcripts and copies of interviews and speeches of Fulgencio Batista and related materials; C: clippings about Fulgencio Batista and clippings related to his travels; D: memoranda by Batista on various topics; E: notes collected by Batista about economic and social conditions in Cuba during his government; F: transcripts and copies of awards received by Batista; G: magazines with cover articles of Batista and his government; H: funeral documents of Fulgencio Batista, his brother Francisco (Panchín) and his son Carlos Manuel. Sub-series A, B, D and G are in chronological order except for the March 10 and September 4 anniversary speeches; C in alphabetical order by topic within chronological order; E in creator-assigned order; F in collector-assigned categories: “Condecoraciones nacionales y extranjeras” (national and international decorations of honor, “Diplomas” (recognitions) and “Pergaminos” (scrolls); G by date and publication title; F arranged as follows under each decedent: correspondence related to Carlos Manuel and “Panchín’s” funerals by collector-assigned numbers; correspondence related to Fulgencio Batista’s funeral in alphabetical order by correspondent’s name followed by clippings arranged by country of origin and publication title.

Items in this series were selected for digitization by the donor as the most important in the collection. They include letters and other correspondence including manuscripts, clippings, programs and other items sent and received by Fulgencio Batista and selected because of the prominence of the correspondents, and a selection of photographs including photos of Fulgencio Batista, his family and their personal surroundings, official portraits and groups, and other photographs of Batista government associates, public works and events of that era. Subseries A-D is arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent; arranged as follows under each name: correspondence by and to Batista, related clippings, documents, publications and works by others; subseries E is arranged by association/institution with correspondents’ names in alphabetical order within each category. Photographs in sub-series F-H are arranged chronologically by decade; F and G are further subdivided as portraits, group photographs, official events and visits, etc.; sub-series I is grouped by subject with folders in alphabetical order by name; folders sub-subseries 2, Public Works, are arranged in broad categories by type of work (e.g. bridges, roads,).
