George Abbott papers

George Abbott (June 25, 1887 – January 31, 1995) was a famous and well-renowned playwright, producer, and director who worked out of New York City for most of his life until he retired and passed away in Miami Beach, Florida. Over the course of his career on Broadway, he received many awards and accolades for his work, including several Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1960), and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director (1983). To celebrate his vast contributions to the world of theater, George Abbott also had both a theater building, which was unfortunately demolished in 1970, and a street in New York Times Square, George Abbott Way, named after him.

His papers feature photographs, playscripts, playbills, financial documents, official records, music sheets, and other materials associated with his life and work on Broadway.

“In his adopted home of South Florida he imaged a cuisine that would wed the raw and rustic powers of the diverse immigrant cultures that comprise the population there to the classic techniques of gastronomy that have survived the test of time and trends. A 2016 MenuMasters Hall of Fame Inductee, noted restauranteur, and the first chef to use the term "fusion cuisine" in its modern definition, Norman Van Aken (1951- ) is a celebrity chef primarily known for his "New World" fusion cuisine. Drawing from the flavors and culinary traditions of Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Asia, and Africa, his impact on the culinary arts has been internationally recognized since the start of his career. His culinary influences on Florida's own local cuisine and restaurant culture are still observable to this day, especially to those who dine nightly at his Orlando restaurant.

This collection serves as a meaningful look into his career as a chef and culinary expert, and his personal life as a man with a deep interest in his family's past and present. The Norman Van Aken papers include documents, correspondence, photographs, manuscript drafts, menus, ephemera, recipes, and more, which showcase the personal life and professional career of one of South Florida's most celebrated chefs. Researchers with an interest in gastronomy, the history of South Florida's restaurant and food culture during the 1990s-2000s, or interpersonal relationships between celebrity chefs, may find this collection useful in their studies.

"Metamorphosis"

"The pictures on this series depict a group of artists getting ready for a play about the legacy of Florence Foster Jenkins. Ms. Jenkins was many things, but overall, she represents the freedom to be who you are. Although, she was the recipient of some of the silliest music criticism of all time; she became an icon for standing your ground regardless of what others might think.

These images take this message a step further by challenging traditional gender roles and emphasizing the universal themes of Jenkins' story. By casting men in the role of Jenkins, the images showcase the power of individual expression and the freedom to be oneself, regardless of gender identity or societal expectations. Men dressing as women in Latin America in the 1970s was not visible or accepted. These scenes were linked to an underground movement that supported the LGBTQ+ communities, and that often met with stigma and discrimination.

In Metamorphosis, I thrived to expose the deep melancholy of the moment, as well as the enduring love for the magnificent theatrical gesture. I looked for images that capture the bond between the artist and the person's essence. The looser frame allowed me to create compositions that transcended the image from its ordinary status into something unique. With each take I was hoping to deliver a particular emotion, kind of a blend of something classic with an everlasting experience. A way in which we can all see ourselves echoed in, not as a cliché nostalgic approach, but more in a reflective manner.

Depicted in these photographs are:

• Isabel Palacios: well-known mezzosoprano and director of several choruses.
• Francisco “Pancho” Salazar: director, musician.
• Alfredo Silva: poet.

"Nuevos Espacios"

"In the 1980s, the art scene in Caracas was booming, and the Contemporary Art Museum was at the forefront of the movement. Led by her director, Sofia Imber, the museum embarked on a much-needed expansion project, named Los Nuevos Espacios, which would go on to become an iconic institution in the city.

Imber was a trailblazer in the art world of Venezuela, and her dedication to promoting and supporting Venezuelan artists was evident throughout her career. Under her leadership, the Contemporary Art Museum became a hub for the country's avant-garde art scene, showcasing the works of both established and up-and-coming artists.

I had the privilege to document the night of the inauguration of Los Nuevos Espacios. It was a momentous occasion, and one that would go down in history. The walls of the museum were filled with the work of some of the most prominent artists of the time, including Alejandro Otero, Jesús Soto, and Carlos Cruz-Diez; and its corridors where packed with the best of the Venezuelan society. Representatives from the artistic milieu, politicians, entrepreneurs, and mainly art supporters and art lovers were present to bear witness of the making of the country’s modern history (the captions on each image list the names of some of the personalities in attendance).

Imber, beaming with pride, took the podium to give a speech, expressing her gratitude to everyone who had made the project a reality. For her, the expansion of the museum was more than just a physical transformation. It was a symbol of the evolution of Venezuelan society and the country's commitment to promoting and celebrating its cultural heritage. The museum was a testament to Imber's lifelong dedication to the arts and her unwavering belief in the power of creativity to transform communities. Imber's legacy continues to inspire and influence the arts in Venezuela, it lives on through the museum and the countless artists whose careers she helped launch. Sofía Imber was a visionary and true champion of the arts.

This series stand tall as a testament of the cultural memory of Venezuela, reminding future generations of the impact that Nuevos Espacios and Imber had on the art world."

"Being There"

"Jerzy Kosiński was a Polish-American writer who was known for his novels, including "Being There" and "The Painted Bird." In the 1980s, he was invited to Venezuela by the Diego Cisneros organization to participate in a cultural exchange program. As part of this program, Kosiński visited the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Caracas, which is one of the most important museums of contemporary art in Latin America, a must see stop and a city pride for all Venezuelans.

Kosiński's visit to Venezuela was part of a larger effort by the Diego Cisneros organization to promote cultural exchange between Venezuela and the United States. His visit to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo was a significant cultural event, and it helped to strengthen the ties between the two countries in the realm of the arts. This series documents that visit."

This collection contains materials documenting Pope John Paul II's visit to Miami, September 10-11, 1987. It includes photographs, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, special edition periodicals, and posters. The collection was compiled with donations from various people working at the University of Miami's Otto G. Richter Library. The photographs in this collection were taken by members of the Otto G. Richter Library staff during the Papal visit. They were donated by Georgina Golik, Ana Rosa Núñez, and Blanca Herrera Torres.

Constantin and Georgeta Arămescu papers

The papers of Romanian artists Ticu Arămescu and his sister, Gigi Arămescu Anderson, contain exhibit programs, newspaper clippings, photographs of Gigi's paintings and of Ticu's sculptures. Newspaper clippings from Crónica, The Miami News, and Romanian newspapers, dated 1966-1981, cover exhibitions of the artists' works.

Exhibition programs from the Norton Gallery and Miami Museum of Modern Art document individual and joint showings. The papers also contain photographs of Ticu Aramescu's sculptures and of Gigi's paintings. Photographs also include several of Gigi Aramescu's presentation at Drury College in Springfield, New Jersey as well as sculpture and paintings from her home. Titles identify most of the photographed artworks.

This collection also contains papers and letters from other artisits, such as Vincent Van Gogh, as well as various photographs, negatives, postcards, and a thesis written by Alexander Seltzer covering the topics of anarchism, antisemitism, the press and the Dreyfus affair.

Miami Beach LGBTQ+ History collection

This collection contains various materials documenting the history of LGBTQ+ people and culture in Miami Beach, Florida. Included within are periodicals, ephemera, general documents, photographs, and audiovisual materials documenting Miami Beach's queer history through the lives, activism, and historical contributions of spouses Dennis Leyva and Clark Reynolds, the donors of this collection.

This collection intersects with the history of the Winter Party Festival, one of the biggest annual LGBTQ+ celebrations for the Greater Miami and Miami Beach areas, as Dennis Leyva and Clark Reynolds are among the co-founders of the event. This collection also compliments the Safeguarding American Values for Everyone (SAVE) records, as they both have worked closely with the organization for decades.

This collection contains documents related to the SAVE History Project, which documents the operations and activism efforts of Safeguarding American Values for Everyone (SAVE), a grassroots nonprofit political advocacy organization located in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1993, the organization's stated mission is to "promote, protect and defend equality for people in South Florida who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender."

This collection contains photographs, audiovisual materials, documents, meeting minutes, training materials, ephemera, and other records which document the evolution and activism of SAVE, including its predecessor organization, the SAVE Action PAC.

Josephine Johnson papers

Dr. Josephine Johnson is Professor Emeritus of the University of Miami School of Communication, former Chair of the Department of Communications, and alumna of the University. Her scholarship extends from W. B. Yeats to post-modern British poets. She is a recognized solo performer throughout the country.

Josephine Johnson's papers contains documents pertaining to her work in organizing a number of poetry events in the Miami area, including the Richter Library Poetry Series and poetry recitals in Beaumont Hall presented by the University of Miami Chamber Theatre, as well as personal research materials.

The collection contains videocassettes, DVDs, film reels, clippings, letters, reports, certificates, sheet music, photos, programs, manuscripts.

Scrapbook collection

This collection features an array of scrapbooks, many of which are homemade, from the 19th and 20th centuries. Subjects covered in these scrapbooks include fashion, advertising, history, Robert Louis Stevenson, Pat Cannon's congressional run, garden clubs, cruises, and more. These scrapbooks are comprised of portraits, photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, programs, brochures, maps, drawings, telegrams, and more. Some of the creators are unknowns or names without renown, but these scrapbooks highlight their personal tastes and interests, offering some unique insight into their lives.

Henry Reich, Jr. papers

Henry Reich, Jr. was a poet and author, member of the American Literary League, a previous New York secretary of the Rebel Poets, and a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines. The collection predominantly consists of Reich's correspondence, and his poetry and articles. The form of these poems and articles range include manuscripts, typescripts, clippings, scrapbook compilations, and periodicals and books in which Reich's poetry appeared. Notably, four issues of The Jewish Forum from 1927 in which Reich was published are included.

Also included are several photographs of Reich.

Randy Liebermann collection

Walter Etling papers

The Walter Etling Papers include documents, clippings, and photographs related to Etling’s student years at the University of Miami, as well as his professional and community activities in Miami from the 1950s through the 1970s.

The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, clippings, documents, letters, programs, advertisements, brochures, and ephemera that Etling compiled into albums documenting his student years, professional activities, community service, and personal life.  The collection also contains loose personal papers, photographs, clippings, and other materials related to Etling’s student, business, community, and alumni activities, and personal life.

Business related materials, such as advertisements, brochures, statistics, and other papers, document Etling’s work as a real estate agent for the Allen Morris Company, the Keyes Company, and Walter Etling Company. Examples include brochures for the Keys Company and the Walter Etling Company, as well as the sale of the Flamingo Hotel. The collection also contains photographs and ephemera related to Etling’s involvement in establishing a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Spain, and letters and documents regarding his service on the board of Key Biscayne Bank.

Community service related materials include letters, certificates, clippings, photographs, and other materials primarily related to Etling’s service to the Miami Science Museum, and also his involvement with Kiwanis International and the Dade County Grand Jury.

The collection also contains materials related to Etling’s extensive involvement with the University of Miami. Class assignments, notes, photographs, clippings, and other materials document his student years. Also included are letters, programs, photographs, clippings, and ephemera regarding his service for the Alumni Association and the Board of Trustees. In addition, the collection contains materials relating to class reunions and university athletics, as well as artistic studies Etling prepared when creating the painting that is on the cover of the University of Miami’s 75th anniversary book, Rendezvous with Greatness. 

Personal materials document family vacations, such as photographs of a trip to the 1976 Winter Olympics. Also included are materials related to his hobby of selling memorabilia, and programs and clippings that document the activities of his children while attending the University of Miami.
