Scope and content
"Rare collection of early carte de visite albumen photo portraits of indigenous people in northern South America, most likely of British Guiana (modern-day Guyana). Fifteen portraits are mounted on the official cards of a little-known studio called Wellcome & Anderson, three are mounted on blank cards with handwriting on verso, and four more are mounted on the card of J.R. Anderson, who continued working as an independent photographer in Georgetown [Guyana] after the dissolution of his partnership with Wellcome. The photographs portray women, men, and children in two studio settings, with some subjects appearing in multiple photographs. Subjects are depicted wearing a combination of traditional and western clothing, and they pose in a variety of groupings with household belongings such as baskets, bottles, plates, and other objects." -- description from the Wayfarer's Bookshop
