Series 5 documents Lydia Cabrera's research regarding colonial Cuba. The series includes original manuscripts pertaining to the period, some colonial correspondence, issues of newspapers of the era, and records relating to slavery in Cuba. Of particular interest are typescript copies of documents reflecting court cases against the members involved in the Conspiración de la Escalera (Escalera Conspiracy) of 1843-1844, including documents related to David Turnbull, an English Consul implicated in the uprising (boxes 49-51).
