The Department of Chemistry collectively strives to expand the frontiers of chemical knowledge through innovative research and teaching. Understood as a community of scholars, the department houses multiple educational and scholarly activities by faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, all contributing to the advancement of the chemical sciences.
The Faculty Senate is the vehicle by which the Faculty is authorized to share in planning and governance of the university. Through its committees and as a deliberative and legislative body, the Senate plays an important role in dealing with academic policies, new program and degree approvals, compensation and the annual budgets, reviews of chairs and deans, and countless other matters of collegial concern and interest.
Honors Sudents' Association serves as the social and cultural arm of the Honors Program. Over a quarter of a century old, HSA has grown to more than 400 members. While the Honors Program coordinates courses aimed at academic excellence, HSA is a step towards meeting the people and the programs students need to succeed in college and in life. Members have the opportunity to meet and network with new and returning honors students, who understand the issues and concerns unique to honors students.

The ceremony, held on the evening before Commencement, marks the transition of Black senior students from their lives at the University of Miami to their new careers or advanced education. Mwambo is a Chichewa word from Malawi in East Africa, which means ceremonial rite of passage.
