Jerry Herman (B.S. ’53 and D.F.A. ’80) is one of the University of Miami’s most distinguished alumni and he is a lifelong supporter of the university. On January 19, 1993, the Board of Trustees Executive Committee passed a resolution renaming the Ring Theatre as “The Jerry Herman Theatre Complex,” in honor of Mr. Herman’s professional success, and long-term generosity to and support of the University.

He (born July 10, 1931) is an American composer and lyricist, known for his work in Broadway musical theater. He composed the scores for the hit Broadway musicals. He has been nominated for the Tony Awardfive times, and won twice, for Hello, Dolly!and La Cage aux Folles. In 2009, Herman received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achivement in the Theatre. He is a recipient of the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors.
