The Richter Library Special Collections unit  (previously known as the Archives and Special Collections unit, or ASC) acquires, preserves, and provides access to rare and unique scholarly resources. Officially founded in 1978, Special Collections serves as a scholarly resource for students, faculty, and staff of the University of Miami, and local, regional, national, and international scholars and researchers.

Special Collections houses an outstanding array of scholarly resources including collections of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, architectural drawings, prints, broadsides, posters, audio-visual materials, newspapers and journals, and other research materials.

Library Circulation comprises the activities around the lending of library books and other materials to users. The circulation files contain information regarding which materials have been borrowed by a particular library user. Access to the the data contained in these files is restricted.

The Acquisitions Department is responsible for ordering, receiving, and paying for new books, journals, periodicals, music scores, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and other non-book materials for the Otto G. Richter Library, Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science Library, Judi Prokop Newman Information Resources Center (Business) and Paul Buisson Reference Library (Architecture).

"The Historic Black Church Oral History Film Project represents an unprecedented campus-community partnership intended to preserve the rich cultural and social history of faith-based communities of color in South Florida, support university-wide interdisciplinary collaboration, and educate a new generation of high school, college, and graduate students about the crucial leadership role of Historic Black Churches in Afro-Caribbean-American communities." The Graduate School of the University of Miami offers over 50 doctoral programs on three campuses (Coral Gables, the Miller School of Medicine, and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science).
