Ros, Enrique, 1924-2013

Enrique Ros was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba in 1924 and was known for his work as a Miami-based Cuban-American businessman and activist opposed to Fidel Castro. While in Cuba, he was the on-island coordinator of the Christian Democratic Movement, one of the underground groups fighting to overthrow Castro, and he continued his involvement with the organization while in exile in the United States. Ros was married to Amanda Adato (1926-2011) and they had two children: Enrique Jr. "Henry" and U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Enrique Ros was one of the prominent intellectuals of the Cuban exile community in Miami, Florida and a passionate defender of human rights and freedom. He passed away on April 10, 2013 in Miami.

The Immigrant Archive Project is an independent national initiative dedicated to preserving the life stories of America's immigrant population by recording, in their own words, the intimate stories of immigrants of all nations. The content of these interviews will be shared with listeners via radio, television, internet, and traveling educational as well as art installations.

The project hopes to preserve the struggles, dreams and accomplishments of America's vast and diverse immigrant population so that future generations may learn from their collective experience.

The Immigrant Archive Project has been established by Latino Broadcasting Company (LBC), a minority owned, nationally syndicated radio network.

Castanedo, Conchita, 1903-1985

Conchita Castanedo (1903-1985) was a Cuban political activist and a founder of the Authentic Cuban Revolutionary Party. Born in Villanueva de Villaescusa, Cantabria, Spain in 1903, Castanedo immigrated to Cuba in early adulthood. In Cuba she attended the Carlos Márquez Sterling School of Journalism at the University of Havana and subsequently established herself as a well-known journalist. She became involved in national politics, and as an alternate member of Cuba’s House of Representatives, Castanedo garnered the nickname “la novia del autenticismo” because of her position within the Authentic Party.

Challenging the rule of Fulgencio Batista in 1934 and again in 1952, Castanedo was temporarily exiled to Florida because of her anti-Batista political leanings, but always returned to Cuba. She left the island permanently in 1960 after Fidel Castro took power, establishing herself in Miami. Castanedo was involved with various Cuban groups in exile, including the Bay of Pigs Veterans Association, the Cuban Women's Club, and the Cuban Revolutionary Party in Exile.

Castanedo died in Miami at the age of 82.

Rafael Baserva Soler is a Cuban pianist, orchestra director, and composer. He studied in Havana, Oriente and New York. In 1960 he moved to the United States, where he led a Cuban orchestra to performances in Carnegie Hall and numerous venues across the country.

James Cason (born 1945) is a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer, most recently serving as Ambassador to Paraguay, a post he held from 2006 to 2008. Prior to that post, he was the Principal Officer of the US Interests Section in Havana (2002–2005). On January 20, 2011, he became the mayor of Coral Gables, Florida.

González, Guillermo, 1932-2013

Guillermo González was born in Cuba in 1932. In 1950, he graduated from the De La Salle School in Vedado, Havana. González left Cuba in 1961 and began working as a draftsman at HJ Ross Associates where he stayed for twenty years. During his time with HJ Ross Associates, he earned degrees in mechanical engineering from Florida International University and the University of Wisconsin. After his time with HJ Ross Associates, González went on to work for sixteen years as the head of the mechanical engineering department at Spillis-Candela Architects. He later worked with McDowell Engineers and TLC Consulting Engineers for fourteen years. In May 2011, on the fiftieth anniversary of his career, González retired from engineering. In addition to his contributions to the field of engineering, he was an active community member. González was active in the Coral Gables Historic Preservation Board and the emerging Cuban Museum. He frequently presented his locally renowned slide collection at local bookstore Books and Books. Besides his dedication to the local community of Coral Gables, González was an avid world traveler. Guillermo González passed away in Miami on June 23, 2013 at the age of 81.

Casero Guillén, Luis, 1902-1998

Luis Casero Guillén (1902-1998) was a Cuban politician, born in Santiago de Cuba. He was elected mayor of Santiago de Cuba in the 1940s and served as Minister of Public Works during the presidency of Carlos Prío Socarrás. In 1952, Casero Guillén was nomiated for Vice President on the Auténtico ticket along with Carlos Hevia for President, but the elections never took place due to the coup d'etat by Fulgencio Batista in March of 1952.

Casero Guillén became a member of the Rotary Club International in 1930 and he continued his involvement with this organization when he arrived in the United States in 1971 with the “Rotarios Cubanos Exiliados” (Cuban Exile Rotarians) until his death in 1998.
