Burdsall, Lorna, 1928-2010

Lorna Burdsall was an American-born dancer, choreographer and professor of dance who spent the majority of her professional career in Cuba after marrying Cuban revolutionary and politician, Manuel Piñeiro. The couple moved to Cuba in 1955 and Burdsall began her collaboration with Cuban dance companies, including the Cuban National Ballet. She then co-founded the Dance Department of the Teatro Nacional de Cuba, which preceded the Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, which Burdsall collaborated with for more than 20 years. Burdsall is most known for founding the avante garde dance troupe, Así Somos (The Way We Are), which pioneered the modern dance movement in Cuba. In 2008, Burdsall was awareded the Cuban National Dance Prize for her contributions to the artform in Cuba. Lorna Burdsall died in Havana, Cuba in 2010.

The North-South Center was created in 1984 to serve primarily as a national and hemispheric resource for the development of trade, economic, and migration policy. The center’s funding was first authorized by the U.S. Congress by the North-South Center Act of 1990. It received federal funding each year through annual appropriations, and became a part of the budget of the State Department. The act authorized the United States Information Agency to “provide for the operation in Florida of an educational institution to be known as the North-South Center, through arrangements with public, educational or other nonprofit institutions.” In 2005 the Center was replaced by the Center for Hemispheric Policy.

Raymond Labonte was an US Army Officer that was stationed in Cuba at the San Antonio de los Baños US Army Air Base during the 1940s. Passionate about land and sky photography, he captured scenes of Havana and its surroundings as well as daily life in the US Army Base.

Miami-born composer/pianist, Raúl Murciano, Jr. is Associate Dean of Administration at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. An award-winning writer and producer of music for television and film, Murciano’s earliest successes came as a founding member and performer with Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. During his 35-year professional career, he has created commercial music cues; served as musical director and performer throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America; and composed works for the concert stage, amongst other musical and professional activities.
