Unidad Anticomunista

Unidad Anticomunista was a clandestine anti-communist organization established in Havana in the early 1960s. Promoting democrary throughout the island, the organization acted in direct opposition to the communist government of Fidel Castro and advocated for the restoration of human rights and personal freedoms for Cubans.

Its mission was to aid the politically oppressed, primarily through the acquisition of arms in an effort to overthrow Cuba's communist government, and to underscore the abuses of communism in Cuba and abroad.

Unger, David

David Unger (1950-) is a NYC-based writer and translator from Guatemala. In 2014, he received the Miguel Angel Asturias National Literature Prize for lifetime achievement from Guatemala. He authored the novels The Price of Escape; Para Mi, Eres Divina; Ni chicha, ni limonada; and Life in the Damn Tropics, which have been translated in multiple languages. For example, his 2016 novel called The Mastermind was translated in Italian, Turkish, Polish, and Arabic.

In addition to novels, he wrote many short stories featured in literary journals and anthologies in the United States and other countries. His stories were also published in magazines, such as Playboy Mexico, Guernica Magazine, and The Paris Review. In 2020, Unger published a children’s book entitled Sleeping with the Light On in homage to his parents, who had emigrated with him in 1955 – a year after a coup d’état overthrew Guatemala’s president Jacobo Arbenz. The book narrates how Luis and Fortuna protected young David from the harsh days of political turmoil and migration, envisioning how children could find a safe space in their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unger has developed a vast oeuvre as a translator for other work, such as those of Teresa Cárdenas, Rigoberta Menchú, Ana Maria Machado, Silvia Molina Elena Garro, Bárbara Jacobs, Nicanor Parra, and even the Popol Vuh, a mythological creation account from pre-Columbian Guatemala.

Unger currently teaches translation in the MFA Program of The City College of New York CUNY and lives in Brooklyn.

Underwood, John

John Underwood (1934-2023) was a well-known sports writer based out of Miami, Florida. He began writing for The Miami News while he was in high school and later went on to graduate from University of Miami in 1956 with a Bachelor's degree in English. Afterwards, he would write for The Herald and Sports Illustrated, the latter of where he achieved the most renown. He continued writing for Sports Illustrated up until his resignation in 1985 to pursue freelancing full time. He also collaborated with famed baseball player Ted Williams to write three books, My Turn at Bat: The Story of My Life, The Science of Hitting, and Fishing "The Big Three," as well as collaborated with Arthur and Peyton Manning to write Manning.

Jorge Ulla is a director and producer known for works such as Guaguasí (1983), Nadie escuchaba/Nobody Listened (1987), and Enchufe.tv (2011). He is a founding partner of the media company d expósito & Partners, active since 2005.

Ulla is the recipient of various accolades, including Clio, Addy, Telly, NY Film Festival, London Film Festival, and CINE Golden Eagle awards, as well as two Latin Grammy nominations and an Emmy.
