President of the University from 1953 to 1962 and a charter faculty member of the University as a marine biologist, Jay F. W. Pearson was recruited from the University of Pittsburgh and succeeded Bowman Foster Ashe as President. Pearson ushered in a decade of growth for UM. During his presidency, UM awarded its first doctorate degrees and ended racial segregation. Enrollment increased by more than 4,000 during his tenure. Pearson was named Chancellor after retiring as President.
Nicholas Patricios holds a Bachelor of Architecture in 1962 by the University of Witwatersrand and a Doctorate of Philosophy by the University College London, England , 1970. He was the Director of the Urban & Regional Planning Program at UM from 1978 to 2012 and Interim Dean of the new School of Architecture from 1983-1984.
