Scope and content
"[ Dominican Republic ]. [ Educationn ]. Republica Dominicana, Secretario de Estado de Educacion y Bella Artes. Cartilla Trujillo para la Alfabetizacion de Adultos. No. 1. Ciduad Trujillo: (Editora del Caribe, C. por A.), 1955. Second Edition. 8vo, original color pictorial wrappers, 41, pages. Illus. (including a vignette portrait of Trujillo). A little chipping and light foxing and toning, with a small unobtrusive puncture to the front wrapper and first several leaves...
An ephemeral text aimed at promoting adult literacy, printed on cheap paper and tending (as with much in the Dominican Republic) to the glorification of el Jefe. The pictorial wrappers present an idyllic scene of industrial and agricultural workers together becoming happily literate. Literacy-which evidently stood at about 30 percent in the 1950s-became a fairly major campaign for Trujillo, though despite the gaudy publication figures for this title (the colophon notes 100,000 copies of this edition), none located in any edition on OCLC." -Garrett Scott, Bookseller
