A substantial group of periodicals and newsletters edited and written by Dr. Cyrus R. Teed, a Utica, NY native and founder of the Koreshan Unity. 'Koreshanity,' as it was also known, was born in the wake of two related western movements: the millenial fervor that swept early-to-mid 19th century central and western New York State, and the utopian communalism that began attracting increasing numbers of adherents during the same period and into the later 19th century.' A graduate of Eclecitc Medical College of the City of New York, Teed's inerests went beyond medicine to encompass alchemy, botany, physics, and metaphysics, and he would regularly conduct experiments in these areas inside what would become known as Koreshanity after experiencing a late-night religious vision. During what he called his 'illumination,' he saw a beautiful woman who revealed to him a series of universal truths which formed foundamental principles of Koreshan belief. 'Among Teed's most interesting beliefs was cellular cosmogony, or the hollow earth - the notion that the earth was not a convex sphere but instead a hollow, concave cell, containing the entire universe with the sun at its center.

After failed attempts at founding communal settlements in Moravia, Syracuse, and New York City, Teed moved to Chicago, IL, where his persuasive oratory enabled him to assemble a firm core of followers in the late 1880's and form the commune called Beth-Ophra. Teed incorporated his organization there as the College of Life in 1886, and established a printing house that began producing three major publications: The Guiding Star, The Flaming Sword, The Plowshare and Pruning Hook. 'These publications began a long legacy of Koreshan publishing aimed at the public as well as their own members, intending to explain and promote their beliefs, relate and preserve their story, and discuss political, social, scientific, and religious ideas and issues.' The Salvator and Scientist, a short-lived publication publsihed concurrently with The Flaming Sword, focused primarily on aspects of Koreshan science, astronomy, and geodesy.

Believing himself to be a messiah who would lead his people in establishing a New Jerusalem, Teed assumed the name Koresh in 1891 (after Cyrus the Great, King of Persia). As with his previous locations, Teed's beliefs did not endear him or his followers to the general public, forcing him to relocate from Chicago to the quiet beach town of estero, FL. in 1894, the final home of the Koreshan Unity where Teed would establish his New Jerusalem. It was here that the Koreshan Unity established a growing, self-sustaining community, though at the height of the movement, their membership numbered no more than 250. Apparently, there were an additional 4,000 members scattered throught the country, including a small contingent who formed a short-lived Koreshan community in San Francisco, CA. Teed died in Florida in December 1908, nearly two years after a brawl with citizens of nearby Ft. Myers, during which he was struck in the head and face several times. This collection is comprised of a scrapbook titled "Juicios, Críticas, Elógios, Artículos" 1889-1936. It also contains clippings collected by Zamora, a resident of Havana, Cuba.

The Papers consist primarily of  typescripts, correspondence, photographs, diaries, scrapbooks, clippings and other primary source materials documenting the life and career of Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

The collection includes a substantial body of writings by George Merrick, known primarily as the founder of the city of Coral Gables in South Florida. In 1916, he married Eunice Peacock, granddaughter of Coconut Grove pioneers, Charles and Isabella Peacock. The correspondence, short stories, essays, manuscripts, poems, speeches, clippings, proposals and plans from the collection document the literary aspirations, as well as the real estate career of George Merrick.  His papers also include correspondence, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera from Eunice Peacock Merrick and other members of the Peacock and Merrick families. George Merrick’s close ties with the University of Miami and his contributions to the institution’s expansion are documented through correspondence, newspapers clippings, and ephemera. Finally, the collection includes extensive literature (newsletters and books) from the Rosicrucian and Christian Science communities. Please refer to the bibliography for a listing of the books.

The collection documents the civic and social activities of the Woman's Club of Coconut Grove - formerly called the Housekeepers' Club. The records include minutes, committee and financial reports as well as membership files, scrapbooks, narratives, publications, photographs and architectural plans. The topical files contain information about the history and development of Coconut Grove depicted with maps, event flyers, local organization by-laws, newspaper clippings and local publications.

The collection contains negatives of Cuban photographs and prints reproduced by Thomas Labs in Coral Gables, Florida.

The Alma Flor Ada papers contain correspondence, photographs, negatives, manuscripts, typescripts, as well as some of Ada's teaching materials.

The Nathaniel Hooper Collection contains one visitors' book from the Chateau Malet in France.

The papers document professional and personal activities of José Martín in capacity of a commercial artist and professor in Cuba and Miami. Martín was a Professor Founder of the Koubek Memorial Center at the University of Miami where he taught for 10 years. He also founded and headed Martín Technical College until 1979, and his commercial firm, "Martín-Studio Advertising," and founded APLA (Asociación de Publicitarios Latinoamericanos). Martín's art expresses pain, suffering and joy of people searching for freedom.

The materials consist of autographed letter of Generalísimo Máximo Gómez, Chief of the Cuban Army during the Cuban Independence War to Victoria Pedraza, dated September 22, 1898, postmarked envelopes with stamp of winning design featuring José Martí and Antonio Maceo by José Martín, postmarked envelopes with stamps of winning design featuring José Martí by Isidro Martín and stamps of first place awards granted to José Martín in a Postage Stamp Contest held in Cuba in 1948 and 1953. The materials also include correspondence, clippings, post cards with award winning photographs by José Martín, drawings by Martín, photographs, awards, certificates, drawings showing various stages of advertisement, documents related to Commercial Art and Advertising College, information about programs offered in Koubek Memorial Center at the University of Miami, scrap book and DVD with Martín's art.
