Scope and content

The short-lived Confederate States of America produced more than 7,000 books, pamphlets, broadsides, maps, pieces of sheet music, pictures, and periodicals. These publications are known as Confederate imprints. The University of Miami Libraries holds over 700 individual imprints, most of which are legislative acts, political pamphlets, bills, reports, and military documents.

System of arrangement

The imprints are arranged in numerical order using the numeric system of T. Michael Parrish and Robert M. Willingham, Confederate Imprints: A Bibliography of Southern Publications from Secession to Surrender. (Austin, TX: Jenkins Publishing Co.; and Katonah, NY: Gary A.Foster, n.d.).

In the container list, the imprint numbers are listed as ITEMS, and when applicable, the section (§) numbers of imprints are listed as FOLDERS within the respective item for the imprint number.

This bibliography is held in the reference area of the Special Collections department under call number: Spec Coll Reference Z1242.5 .P37 1984. In the reference copy, an "FMU" stamp adjacent to the citations indicates that Special Collections holds the imprint, and so this copy can serve as a useful guide to the collection as well.

Parrish and Willingham provide a detailed citation for each item they describe. Researchers are advised to consult the bibliography for full citations.

Finally, two imprints not listed in the Parrish and Willingham bibliography are listed at the end of box 12 as item 9998 and 9999.
