The Richter Library Special Collections unit (previously known as the Archives and Special Collections unit, or ASC) acquires, preserves, and provides access to rare and unique scholarly resources. Officially founded in 1978, Special Collections serves as a scholarly resource for students, faculty, and staff of the University of Miami, and local, regional, national, and international scholars and researchers.
Special Collections houses an outstanding array of scholarly resources including collections of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, architectural drawings, prints, broadsides, posters, audio-visual materials, newspapers and journals, and other research materials.

Mortar Board began as the first-ever national organization honoring senior college women. At UM, it began in 1937 as another organization known as Nu Kappa Tau, which was regarded as the highest honor given to women during the time that Iron Arrow was restricted to men. In 1966, its members chose to affiliate with the National Women's Honor Society to became Mortar Board. In 1975, membership was opened to male students. Today, it is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service.
